Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby faces a lengthy suspension for gambling while in college. While it appears as though his college career is over, the NFL door could be wide open. With the supplemental draft, teams can take their respective chances with selecting him. As multiple teams are still in search of a franchise quarterback, the Miami Dolphins could surprise the league by getting Sorsby.
Albert Breer Believes Dolphins Could Draft QB Brendan Sorsby
With his college career seemingly in tatters, Sorsby could forgo eligibility and declare for the NFL Supplemental Draft. While it is not a certainty that he will enter, Breer, as a guest on “The Rich Eisen Show,” said that the Dolphins could be a key suitor to lure the Texas Tech quarterback.
“I have four teams here that I think in the 2026 draft kept their powder dry for ‘27,” Breer said, “The Jets, the Cardinals, the Browns, the Dolphins. I think all four of those teams kicked the can down the road, you know, at various levels.”
“Obviously, the Jets got Geno Smith; the Dolphins [got] Malik Willis,” he continued. “They’ve all kind of patched the position together and basically said, like ‘We don’t think there’s somebody as there’s somebody worthy of taking that high in ’26. So, we are allowing ourselves the opportunity now to extend this out and get to 27 and take one there.'”
“What happens if one of those teams says ‘Brendan Sorsby is as good as any of the kids that’s coming that are coming out next year, we’ll throw a second round pick at it,'” Breer added.
After two solid years with the Green Bay Packers as their backup quarterback, Miami inked Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million deal. While that deal looks to prohibit them from diving into the supplemental draft pool to grab Sorsby, they do have an option. According to Spotrac, Miami can cut Willis after the 2027 season, incurring just a $13.371 million dead cap penalty.
In four years split equally at Indiana and Cincinnati, Sorsby has thrown for 7,208 yards and combined for 82 touchdowns. While he connected on only 61.4% of his career passes, he brings athleticism and arm talent to the table. Additionally, the team can draft Sorsby and sit him for a year until he gets ready.
The Dolphins, under new head coach Jeff Hafley, began renovating the roster after the franchise parted ways with Mike McDaniel. Receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are gone, leaving running back De’Von Achane as one of the lone offensive holdovers.

Last season, the Dolphins held down the No. 19 spot in the PFSN NFL Offense Impact Rankings. New offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik could be the one to help mold Sorsby into an NFL quarterback. Seemingly overnight, Miami morphed from one of the fastest NFL teams to one of the youngest.
The supplemental draft would allow Sorsby to enter the league before the season, while he is currently under investigation for gambling by the NCAA. The draft has featured talented players who made a serious impact.
For example, Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter entered the league in that fashion, as did former Browns wideout Josh Gordon and Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
In essence, the supplemental draft offers a second chance for college players, some of whom ran afoul of the rules. Will the Dolphins take a chance?
