The moment everyone has been waiting for is finally upon us. After weeks of buildup, the Cleveland Browns are finally sending out Shedeur Sanders as the quarterback. Unfortunately, the situation leading up to the elevation wasn’t the best-case scenario for the franchise.
A strong first half, led by an excellent defensive performance, had the Browns in control of the game. But their starter for the night, Dillon Gabriel, was taken out of the game with an injury.

Why Did Shedeur Sanders Replace Dillon Gabriel?
The noise from the crowd was electric as the second-generation star stepped on the field. But for a big portion of the locker room, it was a rough way to reach this mark, with a head injury to Gabriel taking him out of the game.
Tallying 68 yards on seven completions, he had played a solid game in the first half, leading to the 16-10 lead for the Browns. Adam Schefter confirmed on X, “Shedeur Sanders has replaced Dillon Gabriel, who is being evaluated for a head injury.”
A solid career with the Colorado Buffaloes under his father, the legendary two-time Super Bowl champion and Defensive Player of the Year Deion Sanders, paved the way for many to believe that he could be a potential first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

However, a historic draft day slide saw Gabriel taken 50 picks before him by the Browns, before he was finally selected in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick. But in a quarterback room that also had Joe Flacco in the mix, he was way behind the others on the depth chart.
As a result, it took until Week 11 before head coach Kevin Stefanski gave him a shot on the field. Even as Gabriel, who ranked second-last on PFSN’s QB Impact, was failing to show franchise quarterback characteristics, Cleveland remained unmoving.
However, this injury has finally forced them to give Sanders his big break. Now, it’ll be up to him on whether he can capitalize on a golden opportunity placed in front of him, especially with Schefter confirming that Gabriel has been ruled out of the game entirely.
