Which School Did Gabriel Go To?

As a native Hawaiian, Gabriel attended Mililani High School in Hawaii, where he was named the Gatorade Football Player of the Year in the state.

With his career 9,948 passing yards and 105 touchdowns, Gabriel broke Tua Tagovailoa’s Hawaii state high school record for career passing yards.

Later, he committed to UCF for three years, then transferred to Oklahoma for the following two years, and then finally ended his college career with a year in Oregon.

Revisiting Gabriel’s College Career

Gabriel started 12 games in his freshman season and was later named the Gasparilla Bowl Most Valuable Player.

He earned a Second-Team All-American Athletic Conference award in his following season, where he was ranked fifth in FBS with 3,570 passing yards and second with 373.9 total offensive YPG. However, in his third year with UCF, the quarterback suffered a broken left clavicle and missed most of the season before entering the transfer portal.

His strong performance as the Oklahoma Sooners’ starter culminated in a Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year accolade. It was followed by First-Team All-Big 12 honors the next season. His next stop, Oregon, is where Gabriel most tapped into his potential.

Gabriel was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, the QB of the Year, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy (finished third in the voting), and Third-Team Associated Press All-American in his one season as Oregon’s starter.

How Fast Was Gabriel’s 40-Yard Dash?

NFL Outlook and Scouting Report

PSFN’s 2025 NFL Mock Draft projects the quarterback as a fourth-round prospect who will be drafted by the Miami Dolphins at No. 135 overall.

Ultimately, he was drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Browns “The Browns finally addressed the quarterback position in late Day 2 – but it wasn’t the QB many expected. Instead of ending Shedeur Sanders’ slide, the Browns dropped jaws with their selection of Dillon Gabriel as an alternative,” said PFSN’s Stats & Insights team about the selection.

“Gabriel was a record-setting collegiate quarterback, but he shouldn’t have been worth consideration so early in the draft, for a Browns team that could still stand to invest in WR, offensive line, or EDGE talent. Gabriel is small and has a below-average arm, is volatile operationally, and likely profiles as a backup at best. Even if the Browns didn’t have Sanders on their board, Will Howard would’ve been a much better value pick here.”

Gabriel’s ceiling at the professional level doesn’t seem to be particularly high. He’s an older prospect entering the league to begin with, and he’s small for the quarterback position. His arm is good but not great, and his deep ball is still a work in progress. That limits his upside when projecting him into the NFL.

Gabriel does the little things well, which will get him selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. He feels like a good backup quarterback at the next level, and while he probably won’t ever become “the guy” for whichever team he ends up with, he could carve out a strong career for himself and carve out a long tenure as a steady backup.
