Through the hailstorm of controversy involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, fans online have been extremely critical of the pair, especially Russini. After photos of them vacationing together at a resort leaked, there have been many questions about ethics in the NFL regarding journalist-source relations. One former player even paralleled it to another scandal that lives infamously in fans’ minds.
Tom Brady Deflategate Parallel Emerges in Dianna Russini Drama
Ancient wisdom holds that there’s nothing new under the sun, and NFL All-Pro Marcellus Wiley connected the dots on what seems to be two of the biggest scandals the league has ever seen. Information continues to surface about the latest controversy circling the league, and fan theories are spreading like wildfire.
With Vrabel and Russini in the spotlight, old souls of the game naturally remember some key details about the legendary Tom Brady and the notorious Deflategate scandal of the 2010s.
“The downfall of all this is that Dianna had to resign,” Wiley said on “Dat Dude TV.” “Word is, [The Athletic] said, ‘Just give us your phone’ — Tom Brady style. You remember Tom Brady, the NFL said, ‘Give us your phone,’ Tom Brady destroyed it — oops.”
Brady’s destruction of his phone during the Deflategate investigation raised significant suspicion about the case. Similarly, Russini’s refusal to produce phone evidence of her supposed innocence also raises plenty of red flags around her and Vrabel’s connection.
“[The Athletic] said, ‘Dirty Dianna, come here, let me see your phone,'” Wiley said. “‘Your job is good. We know what we’re looking for.’ She was like, ‘I’m leaving this sexist place. You guys are misogynists.'”
The Athletic reportedly wanted evidence of Russini’s apparent girls’ trip, which is when she refused to comply.
“While The Athletic had been quick to rush to her defense ahead of the story, now executives asked for more evidence from Russini, such as text messages about an airport pickup, screenshots of planning the trip, or photos from a hike, the three people said,” ESPN’s Ben Strauss wrote. “They said Russini never provided sufficient evidence.”
Through all the suspicious vagueness, Wiley also claimed that unnecessary lies are at the heart of the controversy. According to him, if the pair had nothing to hide, they should’ve been more transparent from the beginning.
“You can lie about why, but you can’t lie about it,” he said. “I can rob a bank and give you a bunch of financial reasons … but we still know [you did it]. So, in this situation, the lies are the problem. This story could’ve been dead by now.”
It remains to be seen how the controversy plays out as we ramp up toward the regular season.
