Did Dianna Russini Intentionally Stir Up A.J. Brown Drama in Philadelphia to Help Mike Vrabel’s Patriots Trade for Him?

Dianna Russini faces rumors of intentionally stirring up drama between A.J. Brown and the Eagles to help Mike Vrabel's Patriots.

One player who’s practically guaranteed to be on the move, especially after the 2026 NFL Draft, is Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown. It was even reported that the New England Patriots will be the eventual landing spot after June 1 (for cap reasons).

Simultaneously, there’s a lot of stuff coming out about the relationship between Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, which begs the question: Did she help stir up drama in Philadelphia in order to help Vrabel reunite with Brown?

Did Dianna Russini’s Reporting Damage A.J. Brown’s Relationship With the Eagles?

Over the course of the season, Brown’s relationship with the Eagles began to crumble. There were plenty of reports about behind-the-scenes drama and frustration, with Russini reporting a lot of it. Now, some are wondering whether Russini intentionally stirred the pot, leading to the fractured relationship and a potential trade to the Patriots.

Sports storyteller Evan Hand had the following to say on the rumors:

“There is a much bigger problem with this whole Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel situation than just cheating rumors. It’s that the NFL isn’t looking into this at all… The bigger problem here is weaponized tampering… If we look into how Dianna Russini has been reporting over the past six to eight months, something’s off.

“She was the one who started the entire narrative that A.J. Brown was annoyed in Philly. She cited a ‘league source’ who pushed the idea that A.J. Brown wanted out of Philly and constantly linked him to the New England Patriots… The fact that almost every article that Russini wrote linked Brown to the Patriots makes it smell so bad.”

Eagles analyst Thomas R. Peterson followed this up by saying, “Russini and Vrabel colluded on a coordinated media storm against the Eagles for the past year, trying to stir as much conflict as possible, often while no other reporter had anything on the Eagles. Howie [Roseman] and [Jeffrey] Lurie should go hard after those losers.”

What makes it worse is that this isn’t even the first allegation of Russini and Vrabel potentially colluding in order to land a big receiver. Before Vrabel was the head coach of the Patriots, he was at the helm of the Tennessee Titans. Years ago, the Titans traded for Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones after Russini reported that the Falcons were offered a first-round pick for him and the Titans were a “long shot” to land Jones.

However, the Falcons weren’t offered a first-rounder. By reporting this, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio argues that Russini “chilled” the market for Jones, meaning teams became less interested because they didn’t want to offer a first-round. With the lack of interest following Russini’s false reporting, Vrabel and the Titans were able to land Jones for a second-round and fourth-round pick.

“So how did the reporting potentially help the Titans? Putting out the word that the Falcons had been offered a first-round pick could have had a chilling effect on any team that may have been considering offering a second-round pick. Calling the Titans a ‘long shot’ allowed them to maneuver quietly for Jones,” Florio wrote.

“Given the relationship between Vrabel and Russini, it’s not crazy or reckless to wonder whether her reporting was directly or indirectly connected to the effort to help the Titans get Jones on the best possible terms. Which, of course, will bolster suspicions by Eagles fans that she had been working more recently with Vrabel to get Eagles receiver A.J. Brown on the best possible terms,” he added.

Florio has called for ESPN to review all of Russini’s old reporting to look for more examples of fishy stories. Now, is it possible that Russini created a false narrative to help Vrabel and his Patriots land Brown? Considering Vrabel has ties to the receiver from their days in Tennessee, it’s easy to see why this theory has gained momentum online.

Last season, Brown ranked 21st in PFSN’s NFL WR Impact Metric with a 80.9 grade. Next season, he’ll likely have a new home, and the Patriots are most certainly the front-runners.
