How Long Will De’Von Achane Be Out? Latest on Dolphins RB’s Injury and When He’ll Return

All eyes in Miami are on De’Von Achane, but no one really knows when he’ll take the field again. Fantasy managers are glued to every practice report, and Miami Dolphins fans are anxious, but the team isn’t rushing him back.

With the regular season opener against the Indianapolis Colts looming, the question is simple: Will Achane be ready in time, or will Miami have to rely on unproven names?

What Does De’Von Achane’s Injury Mean for the Miami Dolphins’ Backfield?

Achane picked up a calf strain during joint practices earlier this month. Since then, he hasn’t played, missing both of Miami’s final preseason games, and head coach Mike McDaniel has made it clear the team will be extremely cautious with their star running back.

“He’s an explosive athlete,” McDaniel told reporters. “Calves are the ones that you have to be super proactive, especially with explosive players, we don’t want to have a long, strenuous, nagging issue.

“So, we probably won’t see De’Von this week after further assessment… but that’s more preventative in nature just because all trainers across the league have horror stories with calves if you’re too aggressive coming back.”

After the Dolphins’ preseason matchup with Jacksonville, McDaniel doubled down: Achane hasn’t had a setback, and the team is hopeful he will return to practice ahead of Miami’s Week 1 clash with the Colts on September 7.

Even so, there’s a sense of unease. Reports suggest Achane could be held out up to three weeks if Miami takes a conservative approach with his recovery.

In 2024, Achane totaled 907 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while also contributing 78 catches for 592 yards and another six scores as a receiver. With output like that, it’s no wonder Miami doesn’t want to mess around with a nagging injury right before the new season starts.

How Does De’Von Achane’s Injury Affect Fantasy Football and the Dolphins’ Depth Chart?

For fantasy football managers, Achane’s risk profile is tough to figure out. He delivered an RB5 finish in PPR formats last year, making him one of the more valuable receiving backs in fantasy. But soft-tissue injuries rarely go away quietly, and even a minor strain can throw a wrench into plans.

Should Achane be limited or out for the opener, Miami’s depth will be put to the test. Rookie Ollie Gordon II has caught attention in camp, while Jaylen Wright, now in his second year, is still searching for consistency. The Dolphins also brought in veterans Aaron Shampklin and Mike Boone earlier in the month to shore up the position just in case.

From a fantasy draft standpoint, Achane stays locked in as a top-15 RB, mostly because of his role in the passing game. But his collection of past injuries, including ankle, knee, and concussion issues means you can’t get too comfortable.

Stashing a Miami backup is just smart. The safe route? Take Achane with confidence, but use a late pick on Gordon, who brings a different look and has a real chance at touches if the calf problem doesn’t clear up before September.

Miami coaches say the decision to hold Achane out is all about keeping him safe, not about panic. He’s still expected to be ready for Week 1, but situations like this mean fantasy managers and fans will be refreshing injury updates nonstop. Until Achane returns to full practice, expect Miami to keep things close to the vest as they sort out the final depth chart for the 2025-26 campaign.
