Shedeur Sanders has been having an eventful past few weeks with the Cleveland Browns. It started with his disastrous NFL debut and was followed by his first-ever start in his next game. He was then named their new starter going forward, which sparked a reaction from his father, Deion Sanders.
Coach Prime Reacts to Shedeur Sanders Being Named Browns Starter
The rookie’s first career start, as well as his debut in the week before, came as a result of Dillon Gabriel going down with a concussion.
His second start, which will come in Week 13 against the San Francisco 49ers, is a team decision that is not dependent upon Gabriel’s health.
Shortly after the announcement became official, his father, Coach Prime, reacted on his X account.
He shared a video of his son’s interview following his victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. He captioned it with a message about the Browns’ decision to name a new starting quarterback.
“Thank u Jesus,” said Sanders.

The Browns have declined to give Shedeur any opportunity at playing time during the 2025 NFL season until Gabriel was injured. This essentially forced their hand against the Baltimore Ravens, but his awful debut included completing just four of his 16 passes for 47 yards and an interception. He also blew the lead he had when he entered the game and heavily contributed to their loss.
Gabriel was unable to return in time for their next game against the Raiders, so Sanders slid in for the first start of his career. He significantly improved from his complete dud in the previous week, completing 11 of his 20 passes for 209 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Maybe most importantly, he earned the victory for the struggling Browns.
While his numbers don’t exactly stand out, the fact that he took a step forward in just one week is a reason to be optimistic about his development. It was obviously enough to convince the Browns to give him a deeper role, as he was named their starter indefinitely, despite Gabriel recovering from a concussion.

Their first rookie didn’t quite do enough to hold off the other one and secure the starting quarterback position in the final stretch of the 2025 season. He currently ranks 39th of 40 qualified quarterbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings, so his struggles have been no secret. They continue to seek answers for the position, but maybe Sanders is precisely what they need.
