How Deebo Samuel Will Cost Commanders $12.3M Despite Hitting Free Agency

Deebo Samuel could still cost the Commanders $12.3M even after hitting free agency, highlighting the financial impact of his contract structure

A win-now move the Washington Commanders made last offseason is now showing up on the salary cap. As the Commanders reshape their roster following a disappointing 2025 season, Deebo Samuel’s contract has officially been voided, creating financial implications for the team he’ll likely leave behind.

Deebo Samuel’s Contract Voids, Leaves $12.3 Million Cap Charge

When the Commanders traded for Samuel after the 2024 season, the team was ready to win. The Commanders were coming off an NFC Championship appearance, where they fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels had just won Offensive Rookie of the Year, and the Commanders viewed Samuel as a veteran piece who could help push an ascending roster over the top.

Samuel arrived after spending his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers, where he earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and established himself as an elite offensive weapon. San Francisco moved him for a fifth-round pick, motivated in part by shedding his contract.

Now that the contract has been voided. Samuel will count $12.3 million against the Commanders’ 2026 salary cap despite becoming an unrestricted free agent on March 11.

The 30-year-old is coming off a down season, averaging a career-low 10.1 yards per reception. The Commanders’ investment did not yield the expected return. Injuries impacted the roster across the board. Daniels was limited to seven games in his second season, and the Commanders finished 5-12 after going 2-5 in his starts.

Samuel now enters free agency at a different point in his career than when the Commanders acquired him, leaving his value to be determined by the open market.

There is a lot of change happening in the Commanders. The team parted ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury immediately after the season. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi) Metric, the Commanders ranked 11th offensively in 2025, but head coach Dan Quinn and Kingsbury disagreed on the future of the offense.

Daniels’ rookie campaign in 2024 carried the Commanders deep into the postseason. His sophomore season unfolded differently. Injuries disrupted continuity, and the offense rarely operated at full health.

Head coach Dan Quinn said Daniels will remain at the center of the offensive vision as the staff shifts toward more under-center concepts under new coordinator David Blough. The Commanders logged just 45 under-center dropbacks over the past two seasons, by far the fewest in the league.

Samuel was brought in to complement Daniels on a rookie contract and maximize that financial flexibility. Instead, the Commanders now absorb a significant cap charge without much to show for it.
