Fans and analysts highly anticipate David Njoku during free agency. Recent reports suggest the tight end might join the Minnesota Vikings, but the Denver Broncos now present an intriguing destination.
Broncos Eye David Njoku as Sean Payton Searches for Playmaking Tight End
Albert Breer (Sports Illustrated) reports that the Broncos may add another tight end to their 2026 NFL roster. The franchise previously tried to sign Dallas Goedert, and Njoku remains a free agent.
“I’m not sure the Broncos are done yet at tight end. Denver has had interest in Dallas Goedert, and David Njoku is still unsigned,” said Breer regarding the possibility of the Broncos signing the former Cleveland Browns player and Pro Bowl veteran.
The Broncos need players who can make explosive plays and change games, a need that surfaced after last season ended. In February, Njoku addressed the Browns fans on social media, saying goodbye after nearly a decade and confirming his intent to be a free agent.
Njoku, who ranks No. 48 in the PFSN WR Impact metric with a C- grade, delivered his best season in 2023, earning a Pro Bowl selection with 81 receptions and 6 touchdowns, according to the Pro Football Reference database.
Injuries and quarterback changes in the Browns caused problems over the past two years, but he is still one of the most physical players in the NFL.
Njoku just concluded a lucrative contract (previously estimated at $54.75 million by Spotrac), so the Broncos must consider the financial implications and adjust its salary cap to accommodate his expected contract demands.

Njoku’s athletic profile aligns perfectly with coach Sean Payton’s offensive scheme, as Payton consistently brings out the best in his tight ends. Although the Broncos tried to strengthen this area last year, they continue to prioritize a physical and dynamic receiver in the middle of the field for next season.
As noted, the Broncos’ offense has lacked a consistent playmaker at the TE position. Meanwhile, Njoku consistently stands out for his Yards After Catch (YAC), a skill Payton prioritized in players like Jimmy Graham during his tenure with the New Orleans Saints.
Finally, recent reports indicate that the Broncos aren’t the only team in the race. Other teams, such as the New England Patriots, possess cap space and plan to pursue Njoku’s versatility for the 2026 season.
Given that the resolution of this situation is one of the most eagerly awaited developments in the NFL right now, it looks like we’ll be hearing news involving Njoku in the coming days.
