The NFL trade deadline has officially passed, leaving a trail of league-altering moves and a handful of teams that chose to stand still. While some franchises, like the New York Jets, opted for a full-scale rebuild by trading away star players, others, like the Cleveland Browns, decided to hold onto their key pieces. That decision to do nothing was the biggest move of all for one veteran player.
Why Is David Njoku Ecstatic to Remain a Brown?
Despite being a popular name in trade rumors, tight end David Njoku is staying in Cleveland, and he couldn’t be happier about it. Despite the team’s struggles, Njoku has a deep connection to the city and made his feelings clear. According to Camryn Justice, a passionate Njoku declared his loyalty to the franchise. “I’m in Cleveland, baby. I’m not going nowhere. I ain’t fucking leaving,” he said.
#Browns TE David Njoku was VERY passionate about not being traded yesterday. He knew it was a possibility, but he said he never wants to leave. He hopes he can work out an extension.

Having spent his entire nine-year career in Cleveland, it’s understandable why he wants to remain with the team. However, his future is far from certain. Njoku is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, leaving his long-term status with the Browns murky at best.
Complicating Njoku’s future is the emergence of a promising rookie. The Browns drafted tight end Harold Fannin Jr. in the recent NFL draft, and he has delivered on their hopes in his first season, putting up 38 catches for 352 yards and two touchdowns.
With a TE Impact Score of 78.4, Fannin Jr. is already outperforming Njoku, who sits at 73.9. The rookie’s strong start might give the Browns the confidence to move on from their veteran tight end when the season concludes.
What Is the Bigger Problem Facing the Browns?
Ultimately, the questions around the tight end position are just one part of a larger issue. The Browns continue to struggle as a franchise, and many of their problems stem from the most important position in football.
Like many losing teams, the Browns have failed to find and develop a true franchise quarterback, which remains the primary reason for their ongoing struggles.
This lack of stability under center has impacted Njoku’s production throughout his career. While his loyalty to Cleveland is clear, a move elsewhere could ultimately benefit his career. As the offseason approaches, his contract status will be one of the most interesting storylines to follow for the Browns.
