The Chicago Bears have been one of the most impressive turnarounds this season so far. Starting the season 0-2, they’ve rebounded to a 7-3 record, as the offense has carried them to some spectacular come-from-behind victories in recent weeks.
Facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were without quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the game, the hope was that the team could secure a relatively comfortable victory. Unfortunately, the first half did not go according to plan for them, with D’Andre Swift having an unusually quiet game.
What Happened to D’Andre Swift?
It took a while for new head coach Ben Johnson, but coming out of the bye week, the Bears quickly turned into one of the best running teams in the entire league. That allowed Swift to excel, while rookie Kyle Monangai saw his opportunities steadily climb up.
That was the exact scenario Chicago found itself in against the Steelers, as they split carries between them. Unfortunately, against an excellent front, neither Swift nor Monangai could break free for any major gains.
Swift, in particular, had a rough outing, getting just six carries and tallying 12 rushing yards on them. What made it worse in his case was the fumble, which forced the team into a 21-17 deficit going into halftime.
However, a touchdown drive curated by Caleb Williams allowed them to get back into the contest, even as the running game remained largely untouched for the offense. Instead, Swift added one catch for 14 yards, as Johnson changed his game plan entirely.
Ranked fifth on PFSN’s RB Impact, Swift has been one of the biggest reasons for the team’s turnaround this year. Up to 634 rushing yards and four touchdowns coming into the game, he had also been a force as a pass catcher, tallying 210 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air as well.
