Almost a week ago, the Houston Texans waived running back Dameon Pierce, who spent four years with the team after being drafted by them in the 2022 NFL Draft with the 107th overall pick.

How Does Dameon Pierce Fit With the Kansas City Chiefs?

After interest from the Los Angeles Chargers, the Cincinnati Bengals, and more, Pierce decided to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs on their practice squad.

In his rookie season, Pierce looked like he had superstar potential. In 13 games, the former Florida Gator rushed for 939 yards and four touchdowns in 220 attempts. He added 165 yards and one touchdown on 30 receptions from the passing game. However, Pierce’s season ended early after he suffered an ankle injury.

After the injury, he never regained his footing in Houston. From 2023 to 2025, he rushed for 735 yards and four touchdowns in 195 attempts. In the passing game, he caught 15 passes for 103 yards.

Pierce is joining the Chiefs, who are ranked fourth in PFSN’s Offensive Impact rankings. Pierce won’t be an immediate starter for the team and is more likely a depth piece, so here is how the rest of the running back room shapes up.

Isiah Pacheco

Isiah Pacheco is listed as the starter on the team’s depth chart. Pacheco was drafted with the 251st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. This is his fourth season with the Chiefs.

In eight games this season, he’s rushed 78 times for 329 yards and one touchdown. In the passing game, he’s caught 11 passes for 43 yards. His best season was in 2023, when he rushed for 935 yards and seven touchdowns and caught 44 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

Kareem Hunt

Kareem Hunt is in his second stint with the Chiefs after spending his first two seasons with the team before spending 2019 to 2023 with the Cleveland Browns.

In eleven games this season, Hunt has rushed 116 times for 457 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s also caught 13 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown.

Brashard Smith

Brashard Smith is in his first season with the team. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 228th overall pick.

In 11 games, he’s rushed for 87 yards in 29 attempts. He’s also caught 19 passes for 161 yards.

Elijah Mitchell

Elijah Mitchell was drafted with the 194th pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He is in his first year with the Chiefs.

Mitchell has only played in one game this season and hasn’t recorded any stats. Pierce will likely jump Mitchell on the depth chart.
