Troy Aikman on Jerry Jones’ Decision To Trade Micah Parsons

The Cowboys’ decision to trade away Parsons has sparked widespread debate, and franchise legend Aikman added his voice to the conversation.

Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show,” the Hall of Fame quarterback admitted he is waiting to see how the deal plays out, saying, “I guess we’ll know in time, quite honestly, as to whether or not it was a good trade on the Cowboys’ behalf. Whether or not the Packers benefited the most from that.”

Aikman drew a direct line to one of the most famous trades in NFL history, the ‘Herschel Walker deal.’ With a Netflix documentary revisiting that blockbuster, Aikman noted how Jones mentioned the parallel when announcing Parsons’ departure.

As Aikman put it, “It’s not so much the picks. It’s what you do with the picks. And so time will tell as to who benefited most, just like it did when we made the trade with Herschel and the Minnesota Vikings.”

For Aikman, the uncertainty extends beyond long-term comparisons. He pointed out how much the Cowboys will miss Parsons immediately, particularly on a defense that already had question marks.

“I do think this defense that was going to have some concerns going in… those become even more pronounced without a dominant pass rusher like Micah is,” Aikman said. His remarks captured the unease many Cowboys fans feel as the team looks to retool its roster without its defensive cornerstone.

Parsons’ New Chapter in Green Bay

PFSN’s Brandon Astreicher reported that Parsons’ exit stemmed from a fractured relationship with Jones, which pushed him to request a trade.

The Green Bay Packers seized the opportunity, paying a steep price: Two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. They followed up by handing Parsons the contract he sought, a four-year, $188 million extension with $136 million guaranteed.

Parsons expressed his gratitude to the Cowboys fans while signaling his excitement for the move. On social media, he wrote, “Thank you Dallas ….. GO Pack Go!” He later added, “I never wanted this chapter to end, but not everything was in my control.”

Now in Wisconsin, Parsons is expected to elevate the Packers’ defense to a new level. Lining up alongside Lukas Van Ness, he will face NFC North rivals like Jared Goff, Caleb Williams, and J.J. McCarthy multiple times a season.

The timing is critical, as the Packers hope to have him on the field for the season opener against the Detroit Lions, last year’s NFC top seed.
