Not much is going right for the Dallas Cowboys right now in what has become a turbulent, emotionally draining season. There’s still time to recover, but they’re rapidly losing ground in the NFC East, where the 7-2 Philadelphia Eagles have taken control. At 3-5-1 and riding a two-game skid, the Cowboys must find a way to revive an offense that has gone stagnant after such a promising start.
Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Takes Aim at Underwhelming Dallas Offense
In an appearance on “NFL Live” on ESPN Thursday, Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman didn’t mince words in addressing the Cowboys’ offensive woes. Quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown one touchdown and three interceptions in the team’s last two games, despite having one of the league’s best receiving tandems in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
“It’s indicative of just how much they rely on the offense when you look at the last couple of games,” Aikman said. “And if they don’t play at their best, they’re going to have a hard time winning and it’s why they lost the last two.”

The Cowboys have struggled on the defensive side of the ball for much of the season, and they’re not currently built to win games. If the offense hits a rough patch, the entire ship sinks. If that’s going to be the case, the hope is that the new addition of defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who arrived via trade from the New York Jets last week and has yet to make his debut, can help steer the defense.
Aikman didn’t have much of a problem with the Cowboys losing to the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton’s group (8-2) is currently tied for the best record in the league, and they were likely going to defend their home turf. However, the Cowboys returned home to host a lowly Arizona Cardinals team on “Monday Night Football” and lost by double digits. The Cardinals had lost five consecutive games entering the matchup, and the Cowboys had averaged 41.3 points per game at home this season.
Running back Javonte Williams is enjoying a career resurgence with the Cowboys and leads the team in rushing with 716 yards and eight touchdowns. Aikman suggested that the Cowboys’ offense should incorporate their rushing attack a little more; perhaps that could help alleviate some of the pressure on Prescott’s shoulders.
Regardless of what their fix is going to be, they have to figure it out soon. Following Monday night’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Cowboys will play five consecutive games against teams with a .500 record or better.
“You hate to say it, but that’s when the tough part of their schedule hits them,” Aikman said. “They’ve got to get better, and then defensively, the reinforcements that they got last week with the trade, the bye week, getting rested up. They’re dealing with a lot right now emotionally with the loss of Marshawn Kneeland, and we’ll see how they respond.”
The Cowboys’ offense has a PFSN Offense Impact score of 86.7, tying them with the 7-2 Seattle Seahawks.
