NFL teams have been active ahead of the final week of the preseason, with multiple trades taking place over the past few days. That said, some teams could still make moves before the regular season, and one analyst predicts the Cowboys may trade for a young cornerback to strengthen their secondary.
Cowboys Target Young, Affordable Cornerback in Trade Prediction
Yesterday, the New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings, while the New Orleans Saints traded for wide receiver Devaughn Vele from the Denver Broncos. As the preseason and training camp wind down, NFL teams could still make last-minute trades like these to finalize their rosters before the regular season begins.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Klay wrote an article predicting one trade for every NFL team before the season starts, including a potential move for the Dallas Cowboys to acquire Broncos cornerback Riley Moss.
In Klay’s projected trade, the Cowboys would give up a fourth-round pick to acquire Moss. With Dallas’ secondary facing questions and Moss’s low-cost contract, he believes it would benefit the organization.
“With Dallas’ secondary facing an uncertain future due to DaRon Bland’s impending free agency and Trevon Diggs’ injury history, it would make sense to send a Day 2 pick to Denver to acquire a young, cost-controlled defensive back to build around,” Klay wrote.
The Broncos selected Moss in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and he became a starter for the team in 2024. While he struggled, Moss was solid overall for Denver’s secondary, recording 86 tackles, eight pass deflections, and one interception.
Happy Birthday to No. 2⃣1⃣ @R_moss5! The Denver Broncos drafted Riley Moss in the 2023 3rd round. Last season, he earned a starting cornerback spot and came away with his first career interception, while wearing throwback uniforms, to the delight of the Mile High crowd! pic.twitter.com/m1DnyzekFI

Klay makes a good point about Diggs’ injury issues, as he has played in just 13 combined games in 2023 and 2024. On top of that, if Dallas ends up paying superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons, they likely wouldn’t be able to afford an extension for Bland.
Moss could provide solid depth, step in, and even start at nickel. He’s a physical cornerback and strong tackler who would fit nicely into Dallas’ scheme. As Klay notes, Moss is only entering the third year of his rookie contract, and as a third-round pick, he remains highly affordable.
Trades are always challenging to predict, but with Denver selecting cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Moss has become more expendable. The team would likely listen to offers for him, mainly if they include draft capital.
While this trade remains unlikely, it would make a lot of sense for both Dallas and Denver.
