The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2025 NFL Draft with one glaring need: they had to improve the depth behind superstar wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Dallas had the chance to address that need in the first-round, but elected not to take a receiver.
The Cowboys drafted Tyler Booker with their first-round pick, then added two defensive players, leaving many fans scratching their heads. However, one team executive recently explained how Dallas plans to address the receiver position moving forward.

Dallas could still draft a wide receiver with one of their remaining picks, but it’s clear the team is confident in the group they already have — and there’s a real chance they may not draft another receiver at all.
Cowboys executive Stephen Jones spoke about the team’s mindset. He pointed to the current players in the room and said he believes someone can emerge as a true No. 2 receiver behind Lamb — they just need an opportunity to showcase it.
“(Jalen) Tolbert, (Jonathan) Mingo, (Ryan) Flournoy, all of those guys have the potential to be a No. 2. They just haven’t shown that yet. It’s why we’ve had an interest in upgrading that room. If we don’t come away in this draft with a clear No. 2, we’ll look and see what’s out there,” Jones told Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Nick Harris.

This sentiment isn’t new. It echoes what Jones said before the draft. In particular, Jonathan Mingo has intrigued the front office ever since the team acquired him from the Carolina Panthers at the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline.
“I think him having a full offseason to work with Dak, and as I said, we really liked him when he came out of Ole Miss, and really feel like he’s got a lot of upside,” Jones said of Mingo before the draft.
Jones also mentioned other names he liked prior to the draft, reinforcing that while there was urgency to add another weapon, there’s still belief in the young core already in place.
“Certainly like our young guys, [Ryan] Flournoy and that group. Obviously, [KaVontae] Turpin brings a little something to the mix there in terms of his juice and explosion. I really like our room,” Jones said in an interview with the Cowboys’ official website before the draft.
It’s been an interesting offseason for Dallas. Whether they should have done more at wide receiver is certainly up for debate. On paper, there’s still room to upgrade the position.
That said, the Cowboys clearly like the group they have. Several young pass catchers in Dallas will get the chance to prove themselves in 2025. Now it’s up to them to reward the front office’s faith.
