After a promising run with the Texas Longhorns, Jaydon Blue was considered one of the steals of the draft after falling to the third day. Unfortunately, the Dallas Cowboys running back played in only five games after being selected No. 149 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and failed to make an impact.
Jaydon Blue Addresses Cowboys’ Struggles
While speaking to the media recently after a rocky first season in Dallas, Blue revealed where his struggles during his rookie season stemmed from and how he planned to put things right next season.
“I think I didn’t start off like I should have,” Blue said. “Maybe it wasn’t practicing the right way or just on a maturity level, I think I wasn’t really there. For me, I just think it’s just me looking myself in the mirror, like, why I wasn’t on the field like I should have last year. Those were the things holding me back.
“And knowing how bad I want to be a part of this offense and how big of a piece I can be for the offense, helped me out a lot. Of course I want to be on the field, but at the same time I know this is the NFL, so any week things can change. I just want to make sure that this year and upcoming years that that’s not a problem for me.”

Blue did not play in the first four games of the season until Miles Sanders sustained a knee injury, allowing the running back to make his debut in Week 5 against the New York Jets. In addition, he was usurped as Javonte Williams’ backup by Malik Davis, who had been waived by the Cowboys before the season started.
During a press conference, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that he had held clear-the-air talks with Blue ahead of his second season in the league.
“We kind of put it all out there, put all the cards on the table,” Schottenheimer said. “He didn’t like being inactive, and I was very honest with my opinion of why he wasn’t active. So we had some really great conversations. He took that, he ingested it, took it in, and he’s come back with a great look on his face and a great work ethic.”

The former Texas star finished the season with 129 rushing yards on 38 carries, resulting in one touchdown. It was a sharp contrast to his final season in Texas, where he tallied 730 rushing yards, resulting in eight scores, while adding 368 receiving yards and six touchdowns for the Longhorns.
According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Cowboys had the sixth-best offense in the league last season. If Blue takes a big step in his sophomore season, then Dallas could potentially have a top-three offense in 2026.
