‘This Type Of Attitude Doesn’t Fly’ — Ex-Cowboys QB Slams J.J. McCarthy’s Stance on Kyler Murray

Tension is rising in Minnesota, as the QB battle between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray heats up. Find out more about the drama here.

Some awkwardness might be stirring in the Minnesota Vikings’ camp, as J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray are battling for the starting quarterback position. Head coach Kevin O’Connell and the front office took an aggressive approach to the 2026 season, opting to add Murray to the quarterback room to give McCarthy some competition. However, the 23-year-old quarterback doesn’t necessarily look happy about it.

Ben DiNucci Takes Issue With J.J. McCarthy’s View on Kyler Murray

Having two starting quarterbacks on a team often creates tense situations. Not only does it put the initial quarterback on notice, but it also risks sparking drama.

The Vikings picked up Murray this offseason to create some healthy competition in the quarterback room for McCarthy. However, amid preseason preparations, it doesn’t seem like the two signal-callers see eye to eye on the matter.

McCarthy was asked about his experience competing with Murray, and the third-year pro had some cryptic words.

“It’s just like two guys in a classroom, you know?” McCarthy said. “He sits on one side; I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us… Awkwardness? It’s just, like, the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. That’s just kind of how it is, so I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness.”

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci saw straight through McCarthy’s comments, as he picked up on an antagonistic tone.

“JJ this is the NFL brother,” he wrote on X. “This type of attitude doesn’t fly at the QB position… You have too many people watching how you talk/act.”

Murray was also asked about his experience competing with McCarthy for the quarterback job, and he painted a much more cordial picture of the situation.

“[Our relationship] has been great,” he said. “Obviously, I know he’s a younger guy, so anyway I feel like I can help him — you know, I’ve played seven years now, going on eight, so I’m considered a veteran, even though I don’t see myself as that — give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team.”

With Murray having been brought in to battle McCarthy for the starting role, the latter would understandably not take too kindly to the situation. Additionally, many expect Murray to secure the starting job before the regular season kicks off, which would add to McCarthy’s misfortune in Minnesota.

After missing his rookie season due to injury, McCarthy logged a porous 64.3 PFSN QB Impact score in 2025, ranking 37th in the league. He now has a chip on his shoulder, and it’s showing in his competitiveness.

There’s still plenty of time left before the 2026 campaign, and this storyline might just become one of the biggest as we ramp up toward the season.
