Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Joins AFC Team ‘To Advise the Organization’ on Important Decision

At a time when the Miami Dolphins are searching for clarity and direction, the franchise is leaning on a respected voice of football, Troy Aikman.

After another season that never quite found its footing, the Miami Dolphins have reached a point where decisions feel heavier than usual. That is why, as the Dolphins begin their search for a new General Manager, they have brought in someone who understands what steady leadership looks like. Troy Aikman, a Hall of Fame quarterback and longtime ESPN analyst, is joining the process as a consultant.

Troy Aikman Joins the Miami Dolphins as Consultant

According to Adam Schefter, Troy Aikman is not there to run the show or take a job but to sit in the room and help the Miami Dolphins think.

“The Miami Dolphins have brought on Hall-of-Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant to advise the organization on its general manager search process, per sources. It is not a permanent role, but he will be an advisor throughout the process for the Dolphins’ next GM,” Schefter reported on X.

According to Schefter in another report, the Dolphins want an experienced outside perspective, someone who understands winning, leadership, and the inner workings of the league.

Aikman has plenty of it. He spent the 1990s steering the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl rings. Since then, he has traded his helmet for a headset and spent almost 25 years watching the league unfold from the broadcast booth, currently on “Monday Night Football.” He’s seen how teams come together, and how they quietly drift apart.

The context matters in Miami right now.

Their season went haywire early, and by October, the Dolphins released longtime general manager Chris Grier after a 2-7 start. Mike McDaniel remained as the coach, but the change signaled something more reflective than reactive. The structure, the roster, the direction, all of it was suddenly open for discussion.

There were stretches when it looked like the reset might settle things down. A 5-2 run after the change suggested the team hadn’t lost itself entirely.

Nevertheless, the Dolphins are 7-9 before the season finale. The quarterback position also remains unsettled after the benching of Tua Tagovailoa, who has a score of 72.2 and a C- grade on PFSN’s QBi.

For now, Champ Kelly is handling general manager responsibilities while the search is underway, and while Aikman’s presence will not alter the math, it will change the atmosphere.
