Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Breaks Silence on Caleb Williams Controversy After Facing Backlash for Comments on Bears QB

Troy Aikman addresses backlash over comments on Bears QB Caleb Williams, standing by his analysis and pushing back on claims he was critical.

In a thrilling Week 6 Monday Night Football contest, the Chicago Bears narrowly defeated the Washington Commanders 25-24. The game was billed as a showcase for two rising sophomore quarterbacks, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, and both delivered spectacular performances. Williams finished with 252 passing yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown on 17 completions.

Meanwhile, Daniels threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns, adding 52 yards on the ground, though he did have one interception. The dramatic finish, however, was quickly overshadowed by what happened in the broadcast booth.

Why Did Troy Aikman’s Commentary Spark a Feud with the Bears?

During the game, many fans felt that former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman was excessively critical of Williams‘ play, leading to calls on social media for his dismissal. The criticism didn’t just come from the audience; even the Bears’ rookie head coach, Ben Johnson, made it clear that he had taken notice of the commentary.

Following the game, Johnson alluded to the negative analysis, sparking a back-and-forth in the media. This situation grew more complex when, nearly a month after the initial broadcast, Aikman finally broke his silence on the matter.

In a recent interview with Front Office Sports, Aikman offered a candid perspective on the controversy but stopped short of issuing an apology.

“Being in Chicago and with the Caleb [Williams] situation: when you do live television for 25 years, there’s bound to be times when you say something, and you’re like, ‘I wish I could take that back,’ or ‘I wish I could say, could have said that a little differently,'” Aikman explained.

However, he quickly clarified his stance on this specific incident. “That game was not one of those,” he stated. “I walked out of that game feeling like ‘O.K., it was a game that came down to the wire.’ It’s fun, whatever… all of a sudden, Ben Johnson comes up and it’s got Troy Aikman written on there. And I’m like, ‘What is this?’ First time I heard about it.”

“I’m not sure exactly where that came from,” Aikman continued. “I didn’t go back and watch the broadcast, but I would challenge anyone to go watch it and tell me that any analysis that I gave was unfair. I mean, they may disagree if I thought that was maybe not great ball placement, and they thought it was. O.K., but I’m not sure where it came from.”

As a Hall of Fame quarterback with three Super Bowls, a Super Bowl MVP award, and six Pro Bowl selections, Aikman possesses a resume that lends weight to his football analysis.

Despite the external noise, Williams is having a solid season. The former first-overall pick has thrown for 2,136 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions with a 60.8% completion percentage. He has also been a threat on the ground, adding 246 rushing yards and three more touchdowns.

According to PFSN’s Offensive Impact metrics, these efforts have helped the Bears build the 12th-best offense in the league. Whether Aikman’s commentary was overly harsh remains a matter of opinion. Regardless, the Bears have to be pleased with their quarterback’s development, as they currently sit at 6-3, just behind the Detroit Lions in the NFC North.
