Cowboys COO Stephen Jones Announces Decision on George Pickens’ Future in Dallas

Dallas COO Stephen Jones signals the Cowboys’ direction with George Pickens as a key deadline approaches ahead of the 2026 season.

The Dallas Cowboys entered the offseason facing a big contract decision. George Pickens just delivered a career year. The receiver market continues to climb. And with premium money already committed to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, Dallas had to decide whether to make a long-term investment or take a shorter path. That decision took a big step on Monday.

Stephen Jones Confirms Franchise Tag Plan for George Pickens, No Timeline on Extension

Pickens will not be headed to free agency. According to NFL.com’s Judy Battista, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Dallas plans to finalize the franchise tag for Pickens within the next week.

“We think the world of him. We want him here,” Jones said.

The projected franchise tag value for wide receivers in 2026 is $28.8 million, per OverTheCap. Teams have until March 3 to designate franchise or transition tags.

Applying the tag secures Pickens for the 2026 season while buying the Cowboys time to negotiate a long-term deal. However, Jones declined to provide a timeline for when, or if, that extension might be completed. That decision follows the best season of Pickens’ career.

After being traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers last spring, the 24-year-old posted 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns in 2025. He earned second-team All-Pro honors and his first Pro Bowl selection. He finished third in the NFL in receiving yards and ranked No. 1 among pending free agents entering the offseason.

According to PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, Pickens recorded an 88.4 score, third-best in the league. The production explains why Dallas is preventing him from reaching the open market.

The franchise tag carries financial logic. Prescott and Lamb already command top-of-market contracts. Tagging Pickens prevents immediate long-term cap stacking while keeping the offensive core intact. But it is not without risk.

Some around the league have questioned whether the tag number fully reflects Pickens’ long-term value given his age and production trajectory. A one-year designation can sometimes create tension if a player prefers long-term security.

The Cowboys finished 2025 at 7-9-1 in Brian Schottenheimer’s first season as head coach. Despite the record, the passing offense showed explosiveness when Prescott, Lamb, and Pickens were all healthy. The franchise tag ensures that the trio remains intact heading into 2026.

Jones’s comments remove uncertainty about Pickens’s immediate future. The long-term picture remains open. But for at least one more season, Pickens is expected to remain a Cowboy.
