Cowboys Predicted To Make Blockbuster Trade To Select ‘Instinctive Prodigy’ in 2026 NFL Draft

A new mock draft predicts the Dallas Cowboys will execute a blockbuster trade up to number six to fix their leaky secondary.

As the 2026 NFL Draft rapidly approaches, rumors are swirling about which teams will make aggressive moves to secure top-tier talent. For the Dallas Cowboys, a team desperate to patch up a leaky secondary and solidify their championship aspirations, the writing might already be on the wall.

According to recent projections, Dallas is poised to execute a blockbuster trade up the board to land one of the most highly coveted defensive players in this year’s class: Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.

Why the Cowboys Could Make a Massive Trade for Caleb Downs

In a recent mock draft by PFSN’s Austin Swaim, the Cowboys are predicted to strike a massive deal with the Cleveland Browns to vault into the top 10. The proposed trade sends the Cowboys’ No. 12 and No. 20 overall picks, along with No. 180, to Cleveland. In exchange, Dallas catapults to the No. 6 overall spot, while also netting picks No. 39, No. 146, and No. 149.

For Swaim, the logic behind this dramatic draft-day move is undeniable. “I have no choice but to keep mocking this trade. It’s too obvious,” Swaim noted, pointing out how perfectly the transaction aligns with both franchises’ offseason goals. “The Dallas Cowboys are contenders that need a defensive leader.”

That leader is Downs. Since bursting onto the national scene as a true freshman starring in Alabama’s secondary in 2023 before transferring to Ohio State, Downs has been a revelation.

Amassing 12 passes defended and 6 total interceptions over his collegiate career, he has consistently showcased elite playmaking ability. While a knee injury rumor surfaced following the NFL Combine, it hasn’t significantly dampened the enthusiasm surrounding a defensive back Swaim aptly dubs an “instinctive prodigy.”

The Cowboys’ need for a defensive overhaul is well-documented. Last season, the unit struggled to find its footing, ranking dead last in PFSN’s Defensive Impact (DEFi) score.

Dallas became far too well-known for back-breaking coverage busts, a fatal flaw for a team harboring Super Bowl ambitions. Downs would inject immediate discipline, range, and leadership into the back end of the secondary.

While the safety position is occasionally undervalued in the modern NFL draft landscape, Swaim emphasizes its historical significance in building a championship roster.

“Safety isn’t seen as a critical position in league circles, but look at every great defense in the last 30 years,” Swaim explained. “They’ve usually got extremely high-level safety play. Downs would bring that to a Big D defense that’s become far too notorious for coverage busts.”

If the Cowboys are truly committed to transforming their defense from a liability into a strength, moving up to draft Downs could be the defining moment of their 2026 offseason. By swinging for the fences, Dallas might just secure the foundational piece necessary to finally push them over the top.
