Is Cooper Kupp Playing vs. Rams? A Look at the Seahawks WR’s Status Against His Former Team on TNF

Facing his former team with a chance to squash their one-seed hopes, Cooper Kupp did not have a great showing for the Seattle Seahawks.

After a brutal loss earlier in the year, the Seattle Seahawks had to be walking into their Thursday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Rams with vengeance on their mind. The first outing was a rough offensive affair, but both teams still had a legitimate chance of claiming the one-seed with a win.

Unfortunately, the first half did not work out in their favor, as they trailed 13-6 going into the break. It was the offense, in particular, that hadn’t shown up to its fullest potential for the Seahawks, with Cooper Kupp having a particularly disappointing outing against his former team.

What Happened to Cooper Kupp?

As the offense failed to get going throughout the period, it was the passing attack that was having a particularly brutal first half. Managing just 79 passing yards in total, they dropped back less than 10 times.

That affected Kupp’s numbers as well, as he hauled in two catches for 18 yards. Unfortunately, his numbers were marred in a major way near the end of the half, but a critical fumble changed the script entirely.

A 17-yard gain on a pass on the final drive of the period for the Seahawks ended with Los Angeles getting the ball back, keeping their lead intact going into the halftime break. Kupp, though, most assumed, would have extra motivation for this game in particular.

After spending the entirety of his career with the Rams, which included a Triple Crown-winning season in 2021 that culminated in the team winning a Super Bowl and Kupp being named Super Bowl MVP, diminishing numbers and a shaky injury history caused the team to move on from him this offseason.

To replace him, they brought Davante Adams into the mix, and Kupp had to find a new home in Seattle. The divorce was a drawn-out, public affair, where the veteran wide receiver made it clear that he did not wish to move on from Los Angeles.

With the Seahawks this year, he’s tallied 519 yards and two touchdowns coming into this game, ranking at number 42 on PFSN’s WR Impact. The last time he played the Rams, too, was a mediocre affair from the veteran, as he finished the game with just 23 receiving yards on three catches.

For a player who was viewed on the short list of best wide receivers in the league, his star has undeniably diminished over the last few years, and even more so on the Seahawks, where he has been thoroughly outperformed by Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
