Clark Hunt Broke Down What Led to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Move

The Chiefs are moving from their longtime home in Missouri to a new state-of-the-art domed stadium across the border in Kansas by the start of the 2031 NFL season. The franchise has played in Kansas City, Missouri, at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972, but it will now relocate to a new indoor stadium being built in Wyandotte County, Kansas.

The location will be near the Kansas Speedway and will have additional headquarters and training facilities in nearby Olathe. The move, which involves a total investment package worth approximately $4.4 billion, has left many Chiefs fans dismayed at what the franchise is leaving behind.

Arrowhead Stadium and its adjoining facilities in Kansas City, Missouri, have been central to the franchise’s identity and history, having hosted the AFC Championship six times in the past seven years.

Fans will still be able to see Chiefs games in Missouri through the end of the 2030 season, as per the existing lease, before the move takes effect. As the countdown to relocation begins, Chiefs owner Hunt explained what led to his final decision.

“So, we had a great dialogue with Missouri all the way through the end of last week. Just frankly, not everything that needed to be resolved was resolved. The big difference is we were working with one party in the state of Kansas, and then with Missouri, we were working with the governor’s office, county, and also the city, and we didn’t get there for the timeline.”

Hunt’s words might have some truth in them, but the actual deal that was struck between the Chiefs’ organization and the state of Kansas reveals another side to this call.

Overall, the Chiefs were known for decades for having one of the most formidable home-field advantages in the NFL, which became particularly evident this past decade. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have spearheaded the league’s most recent dynasty, winning three Super Bowls in five years.

While the franchise is set to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014, the future should be bright with Mahomes at just 30 years old. The future Hall of Famer will therefore be around to see if there are any fan protests over the next few years as the Chiefs slowly move into a new era.
