Patrick Mahomes will have a new offensive coordinator for the 2026 season. The Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced the return of Eric Bieniemy after three years away, and in turn, Matt Nagy will leave the franchise after three years in the role.
What Did Patrick Mahomes Say To Matt Nagy After His Former Offensive Coordinator Left?
Bieniemy served as offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, helping Mahomes and the Chiefs win two Super Bowls and leading the team to another in 2020. He left the franchise with ambitions to become an NFL head coach, but opportunities never materialized.
With Bieniemy gone, Nagy took over after a failed stint as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. He helped Mahomes win another Super Bowl victory in 2023, but the offense stalled in the past two years. With the superstar quarterback on the roster, 2025 was the first season that the Chiefs did not qualify for the playoffs.
After news of Nagy leaving became official, Mahomes shared a message on his Instagram account, writing “Thank you coach for everything! Made me a better player and man.”

This was not the first time that Nagy worked with Mahomes during his career. He had a previous stint as offensive coordinator in Kansas City between 2016 and 2017. They overlapped during Mahomes’ rookie season, with Alex Smith working as the starting quarterback in 2017 before being traded to the Washington Commanders.
There has been a clear production drop for Kansas City in recent years. According to our PFSN Offense Impact Metric, they have gone from the best offense in the league in 2022 to the 17th-best offense in 2025.
In 2026, they’ll also have to deal with less preparation time. Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL late in 2025, and instead of getting ready for another year, he’ll spend most of the offseason recovering from knee surgery.
For Matt Nagy, the future could turn into brighter opportunities. On Jan. 21, he interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles to take over as offensive coordinator. A year ago, the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59, denying Nagy’s Chiefs a historic three-peat. He had also been in the hunt to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, but Robert Saleh was hired instead.
In his three years away from Kansas City, Bieniemy had three different jobs. He worked as assistant head coach for the Washington Commanders, moved to become the offensive coordinator for UCLA in 2025, and, most recently, was the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears.
