Travis Kelce will remain an offseason storyline in the Kansas City Chiefs as questions continue to swirl about what comes next for the legendary tight end. With no decision made, his future remains a mystery. But within the Chiefs organization, hope remains.
Clark Hunt Says Chiefs Hope Kelce Returns in 2026
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt addressed Kelceās status during an appearance on “Good Morning Football,” where he was asked about Kelceās future. Hunt did not say he knew anything about what Kelce may decide. He did offer a glimpse into what they may be saying about Kelce inside the building.
Clark Hunt says on @gmfb that Chiefs “certainly hope” Travis Kelce will return in 2026.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that he can still play.”

The Chiefs ācertainly hopeā Kelce will return for the 2026 season, Hunt said. He added that there is āno doubt in my mind that he can still play.ā
Huntās remarks matched what Kelce has said publicly in recent weeks. Speaking on his podcast, Kelce said he would return āin a heartbeatā if his body allows. He explained that the decision will come down to recovery and whether he feels capable of handling another full season, rather than any lack of motivation or interest in continuing his career.
Kelce, who will turn 37 during the 2026 season, finished his 13th year in the NFL. It was the first season of his career that did not include a playoff appearance. He finished the year with 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns, earning his 11th Pro Bowl selection.
But the Chiefs struggled late in the season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15. The Chiefs lost their final three games. Kelce totaled just nine catches for 54 yards over that stretch.
Kelce has acknowledged that this offseason feels different from the last one. After the previous season, he said he knew quickly that he wanted to return. This time, it seems the decision may take longer as he evaluates how his body responds after the season.
From the team, there has been no push for clarity. Huntās comments show patience. The Chiefs have not suggested they are planning around Kelceās absence. They will be ready with or without him as Mahomes recovers. Mahomes’ availability is also in question for Week 1.
Kelceās 2025 season still held up strong when measured against his peers. He with an 80.6 score and a B- grade, ranking 12th in PFSNās TEi. He remained a focal point of the Chiefsā passing game, finishing sixth at the position in receptions (76) and fourth in receiving yards (851) while seeing 108 targets, the fourth-most among tight ends.
