On Friday, Andy Reid was asked the question everyone in the Chiefs has been quietly orbiting: Is Travis Kelce coming back?

“There is communication,” Reid said. “That’s the main thing. I’ve said this before: As long as there’s communication, I’m good. That means people want to move forward. I think that’s where Trav is.ā
Itās the kind of quote that sounds simple until you sit with it. In late February, when the offseason still feels fragile, communication is its own kind of promise. It suggests a possibility. It suggests that neither side has emotionally packed up the house just yet.
The Chiefs are going through an unfamiliar version of themselves. The perennial AFC powerhouse missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade. Patrick Mahomes is rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL, grinding through long days with trainer Julie Frymyer. For a franchise so used to January lights, this offseason feels quieter. A little bruised.
And in the middle of it is Kelce, 36 years old, 13 seasons in, and standing at one of those points athletes rarely admit theyāve been thinking about.
When the 2025 season ended with a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, Kelce acknowledged he wasnāt sure what came next. He promised clarity before free agency opens in March. Since then, whispers about retirement have grown louder. Some point to the numbers, three straight seasons shy of 1,000 receiving yards after seven consecutive four-digit campaigns. Some point to the wear and tear that only 13 NFL seasons can bring.
And yet, even in a ādownā year, Kelce led the Chiefs in targets (108), receptions (76), yards (851), and touchdowns (5). He has a score of 80.6 on PFSNās tight end Impact metric. Over his career, Kelce has compiled 1,080 receptions for 13,002 yards and 82 touchdowns, adding two rushing scores.
Eleven Pro Bowl. Four First-Team All-Pro selections. Three Super Bowl titles, all with the franchise that drafted him in the third round back in 2013. Itās the kind of story that does not beg for one more chapter. Itās already a finished novel. Which is perhaps why Reid is careful not to rush him.
“I’m not trying to put words in his mouth at all, and I try to give him some space here,” Reid added. “He’s been doing this a long time, and he can sort all that out as he goes forward. But we’re proceeding with that.”
If Kelce returns, he would be working with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, whose disciplined edge helped shape some of Kelceās strongest seasons from 2018 to 2022.
