When players leave their long-time team, after performing well, eyes around the NFL will open. David Njoku is no exception, as after nine years with the Cleveland Browns, he left town and became a free agent. Now a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, the tight end’s arrival in California had social media buzzing.
NFL Social Media Erupts as TE David Njoku Signs With LA Chargers
Njoku departed Cleveland for Los Angeles and the opportunity to play for the Chargers. A former Pro Bowler, Njoku has played in 118 games with 384 receptions and 34 touchdowns.
According to Ian Rapoport, Njoku agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million as the Chargers add another weapon to their offense.
In Cleveland, Njoku dealt with multiple quarterback changes and an overall lack of offensive cohesion. Now, he walks into a new situation that he hasn’t seen in almost a decade, in which his presence makes the division a gauntlet for other teams.
All the pieces lining up for an extremely fun offense with Mike McDaniels and Justin Herbert.

As mentioned, Njoku goes from an inconsistent quarterback situation to a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback in Justin Herbert, whose ability to throw with both velocity and accuracy can elevate the Chargers to have one of the NFL’s best offenses.
“Welcome TE David Njoku! If he can stay healthy, the Chargers have added another superb athlete who can play either in-line or flexed out,” The “Thunder Down Under Chargers Podcast” wrote on X. “Weapons welcome! Oh, and do you think Njoku will be happy to have Herbert at QB after what he dealt with in Cleveland for 9 years? 😬👇”
Njoku joins a tight end group with three players that could easily start, but he will be the unquestioned starter. Moreover, the team could easily flow into a two-tight-end formation that will give defenses headaches.
A welcome addition to the room! Excited to see what Njoku can do this year with the Chargers! https://t.co/S8dGPSMgIK

With Njoku presumably taking up the majority of the snaps, other tight ends will probably see their snaps fall, which is a problem for them and those with a vested interest in their backups.
“That sound you hear is Oronde Gadsden’s fantasy value plummeting,” Dr. Jesse Morse said on X.

However, there is still hope for the other tight ends. Njoku could open the door for a younger player who is looking to make headway into a regular NFL role.
It’s not good for Oronde Gadsden, but I’m not sure how bad it is either. Njoku is likely to be the Chargers in-line TE, something Gadsden wasn’t going to do anyways. It’s really a matter of how much Njoku has left, and how many targets he can earn. https://t.co/SpyafcGld4

With a new tight end and a new offensive coordinator, Los Angeles hopes to stay ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. McDaniel, who turned Miami’s offense into a prolific one, helms an offense that aims not only to spread the ball around but also to pressure defenses into using subpackage defensive backs. As a result, the Chargers will look to move the ball both horizontally and vertically.
“This is an awesome signing for the Chargers,” Anthony Rivardo said on X. “That team is going to be really good this season. Their offense will be dangerous with Mike McDaniel as OC.”
Njoku is a versatile player who can operate in line, in motion, and flexed out against many smaller NFL defensive backs. His ability to get open and catch 65.3% of his targets enhances his value.
The Chargers will need to contend with the Chiefs, Broncos, Bills, Patriots, Texans, and probably either the Steelers or Ravens. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Chargers’ offense ranked 27th in the league, and they needed significant changes, which they have made in the offseason.
Will the veteran prove to be the missing piece of their puzzle to join the best teams in the NFL?
