CFB World Reacts As Brian Kelly Makes $40M Claim About Lane Kiffin’s LSU

Former LSU head coach Brian Kelly believes that his successor, Lane Kiffin spent in excess of $40 million on the roster.

The landscape of modern college football continues to change. With NIL becoming prevalent, programs vie to secure the services of elite players. Former LSU head coach Brian Kelly knows the lay of the land. This morning, he appeared on a morning show, sparking discussion and debate across social media.

Brian Kelly Claims LSU Boasts a $40+ Million Roster; Social Media Explodes

After four seasons and a 34-14 record, LSU fired Kelly and replaced him with Lane Kiffin. Since then, the Tigers embarked on a massive rebuild. According to 247Sports, Kiffin signed 11 commits and 40 transfers. Kelly stopped by the “College Sports on SiriusXM” show. Host Danny Kanell relayed Kelly’s thought.

Kanell wrote in his X post, “Brian Kelly just told us on @SXMCollege that Lane Kiffin’s current roster at LSU is over $40 million.” Social media quickly reacted to the statement, taking multiple angles in their replies.

Darren Heitner, an attorney specializing in sports, also chimed in. He also teaches at the University of Miami School of Law. He represented former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah in a suit against the school that sought to prevent him from transferring to Miami.

“And LSU isn’t alone when it comes to $40 million+ football rosters. Still a small fraction of the combined salaries on an NFL team roster.”

Heitner acknowledged the potential validity of Kelly’s statements, adding his belief that others have followed LSU’s lead. Which ones will remain a mystery? This reaction links LSU to the largest roster payroll in the history of the game. Without a list or context, that could be difficult to prove.

College Football Alerts’ X account posted, “Lane Kiffin’s current LSU roster costs over $40 MILLION DOLLARS. This is by far the most expensive college football team ever.”

Preston Guy covers LSU for TigerBait.com. His take plays more into the school’s favor. He wrote on X:

“If #LSU is smart, it secretly goes along with the narrative that Brian Kelly didn’t have the resources to win and is really a great coach. There might be 50 million reasons to go with that.”

In essence, if the school doesn’t refute Kelly’s accusations, Guy believes another university could hire him. The former coach stated that he lacked the same resources as Kiffin and could not achieve the same level of success.

If they do, whatever he makes there will be subtracted from what the Tigers still owe him. Within Kelly’s contract, there was a provision called “duty to mitigate.” That means, as long as the program is paying his salary, Kelly must keep looking for other jobs.

If Kelly’s opinion becomes fact, that places serious pressure on Kiffin. At Ole Miss, he led a strong offense, but the alleged $40+ million may demand more than the No. 12 team in the PFSN CFB Offense Impact Rankings. While no word of an official spring game has been released, the team is slated to begin spring practice on March 24.
