Analysts Talk About What Makes a Good College Football Uniform

“The thing that Boston College did a good job of is they used updated, body-hugging material and the colors are … simple,” Wasserman said Thursday on “Andy & Ari On3.” “They have the sleeves, they have the ‘BC’ logo on the chest, they have the numbers, and there’s nothing to it.”

Wasserman contrasted the Eagles’ uniforms with the Atlanta Falcons’ recent threads, which are adorned with the letters ‘ATL’ on the chest and a clunky number font. Not to mention the gradient uniforms, which have been put away.

“The more it looks like an XFL uniform or the more the uniform looks like it was in the movie ‘Any Given Sunday,’ the worse it looks,” Wasserman said.

Staples admitted he was tentative about New Balance taking over for Boston College. Wasserman graded the overhaul an A-plus.

“Maryland, I think, is the perfect example of trying too hard,” Wasserman said. “If you look back at the old Maryland uniforms where it just says ‘Terps’ on the helmet, those red ones, it’s a million times better than whatever they’re wearing now. … I thought I was gonna have a stroke when I was watching their games. And I understand the concept of state pride and showing exactly who you’re supporting and where you’re from.”

Staples and Wasserman listed some programs with appealing uniforms, including USC, Michigan, Ohio State, UCLA, Ole Miss, Florida, Florida State, Penn State, Alabama, and Notre Dame. The co-hosts also discussed Oregon, which is known almost as much for its myriad combinations of jerseys, pants, and helmets as it is for its play on the field.

“The thing with me and Oregon is I feel like some of their combinations are perfect and some of them are awful,” Wasserman said. “You don’t know what they’re gonna do. And sometimes they don’t have the right combination of pants and jerseys and helmets. Sometimes I feel like they don’t match because they do too many different things.

“Oregon, to me, I think you could say has cool uniforms, but I would never put them anywhere near the pantheon of best because there’s no consistency and you don’t really know what they are.”
