‘Don’t See That Flying’ — Insider Deals Major Blow to Brendan Sorsby in NCAA Lawsuit

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is one of the most high-profile student-athletes to be caught up in a gambling investigation that has put his college football career in jeopardy. Sorsby has been in a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction since April 27 and has been rendered ineligible to play for the Red Raiders.

On Monday, Sorsby filed for an injunction against the NCAA, seeking his eligibility to be reinstated next season.

Why Chris Low Is Pessimistic About Brendan Sorsby’s Chances in Court

During an appearance on the “680 The Fan” episode on Wednesday, On3 analyst and college football insider Chris Low was pessimistic about Sorsby’s chances of winning his lawsuit against the NCAA.

“He’ll get an attorney and try to get an injunction in state court,” Low said. “We’ve seen some people win, Trinidad Chambliss won at Ole Miss, Joey Aguilar at Tennessee did not. Now this is a much different topic, this is gambling, the ultimate no-no in college sports. That sort of defense is almost like a Hail Mary to me. I don’t see that flying.

“Even in a favorable state court with a judge who’s got a degree or two from Texas Tech. If he’s granted an injunction and allowed to play again this year, think of the Pandora’s Box that opens in football with gambling already pretty prevalent. The dirty little secret is, I guarantee you, Sorsby’s far away not the only college athlete who gambles.”

Sorsby’s lawsuit will be presided over by Judge Phillip Hays, who has a bachelor’s and law degree from Texas Tech. At the same time, one of the quarterback’s lawyers, Dustin Burrows, is also an alumnus of the program, in addition to being the speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

The quarterback’s attorneys are seeking a resolution to the issue before June 15, since the deadline for filing for the NFL Supplemental Draft is June 22.

According to Sorsby’s filing, the Red Raiders quarterback’s offer to serve a two-game suspension next season and to help the NCAA to educate student-athletes on the danger of gambling was rejected outright by the authorities.

Sorsby was one of the most highly coveted prospects in the transfer portal after starring for the Cincinnati Bearcats last season and was a huge coup for Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire.

He earned an impressive PFSN College QB Impact score of 88.2 after managing 2,800 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, while adding 580 rushing yards and 9 scores for the Bearcats.
