Where Are the Two Teams Standing Heading Into The Fiesta Bowl?
Ahead of tonight’s Fiesta Bowl clash between Ole Miss and Miami, both teams are coming off different performances. The Hurricanes are coming off a string of impressive performances, holding the Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas A&M to under 17 points.
According to PFSN College Defensive Impact rankings, Miami’s defense ranks fifth nationally. This includes standout edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. Before last week’s game against the Buckeyes, Bain Jr. had 23 solo tackles and 7.5 sacks on the season.
The Hurricanes also have another explosive pass-rushing prospect in Akheem Mesidor. Before Miami’s game last week against Ohio State, the Hurricanes’ head coach, Mario Cristobal, singled both players out as being vital to his game plan.
“So, the fact that those two guys have that kind of a relationship and that they get to compete against each other every day and against really good offensive linemen, it bodes well for us.” Cristobal stated.
Meanwhile, the Ole Miss Rebels are coming off an explosive offensive performance, scoring 39 points against the Georgia Bulldogs. This included a massive performance from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who was singled out by the Miami head coach before tonight.
“But certainly, they’re an excellent, excellent offense. No one’s really had any success against them whatsoever. So looking forward to the opportunity to compete.” Cristobal stated in his press conference before tonight’s Fiesta Bowl.
Following that statement, Miami will have the opportunity to test this defense once again against one of the top offenses in the country. Ole Miss has also been bolstered by the return of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., who is preparing to finish the season before leaving to join Lane Kiffin.
