Despite Nearly $2M Deal, UCLA GM Reveals QB Nico Iamaleava’s Real Motivation to Leave Tennessee as Bruins Benefit Even More

Despite a nearly $2 million contract, UCLA's GM reveals the true reason for QB Nico Iamaleava's transfer and the added benefits his arrival has brought.

The biggest story of the college football offseason came when former five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava left Tennessee and entered the portal.

While reports suggested financial reasons were behind the move, with Iamaleava committing to UCLA on a nearly $2 million deal, the Bruins’ general manager is now revealing the real reason for his transfer and the early impact he’s had on the program.

UCLA GM Reveals True Reason Behind Nico Iamaleava’s Tennessee Transfer

On April 10, On3’s Pete Nakos revealed that Iamleava, the second-ranked quarterback in the 2023 class behind Arch Manning, was renegotiating his contract with Tennessee’s NIL collective.

Shortly after, Iamaleava missed Tennessee’s final spring practice before the team’s spring game. Then, on April 12, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel announced the team was “moving on” from the quarterback.

Not long after Thamel’s story broke, Iamaleava submitted his paperwork to enter the transfer portal once the spring window opened. When it did, he transferred to UCLA. Many believed his move was driven by financial reasons and a failure to reach a new agreement with the Vols, with the young quarterback reportedly seeking more.

However, that may not be the whole story. At Big Ten Media Days, the new UCLA quarterback explained that, as a California native, he decided to leave Tennessee to be closer to his family.

“Just false stuff about whether it was a financial thing or not. My driving factor to come back home was my family, and I hope every Tennessee fan understands that,” Iamaleava said.

Iamaleava isn’t the only one saying his transfer was due to family reasons. In a recent interview with The Athletic, UCLA’s general manager, Khary Darlington, also believes Iamaleva’s family is what led him to wanting to move back home.

“Once you peel back the layers, you realize it wasn’t just about (money) at all,” Darlington told the Athletic. “This was a big family that did not want to travel all over the country to see their kids play. I think home and family were at the heart of everything.”

Not only did Darlington clarify Iamaleava’s motivation to transfer, but the GM also explained how having a quarterback of his talent has helped the Bruins build their roster for the 2025 season.

How Iamaleava’s Transfer Has Impacted the Bruins Without Even Playing a Snap

There aren’t many quarterbacks with more raw talent than Iamaleava, and according to Darlington, having him at quarterback has helped UCLA in the transfer portal.

Darlington explained that transfer wide receivers have been willing to take pay cuts to play with the star quarterback.

“The discounts started happening,” Darlington told the Athletic. “Like if their price-point was at 6, and we were at $400,000, they were willing to do it. We lost out on probably three wide receivers because the school we were competing with came back and doubled the money.”

It’s no surprise that other players want to play with Iamaleava, and UCLA took advantage by bringing in three transfer wide receivers this offseason. The Bruins enter 2025 with low expectations in a strong Big Ten conference, but if Iamaleava performs at a high level, they have a chance to compete with anyone.
