‘This Is the Caveat’ — Former NFL MVP Declares Kalen DeBoer Is the Wrong Fit for $87.5M Alabama Job

Cam Newton evaluates Kalen DeBoer's position at Alabama, claiming crushing expectations of succeeding Nick Saban won't give him any grace.

Replacing Nick Saban is not an easy task, and Kalen DeBoer is finding it the hard way. Fresh off signing a massive seven-year, $87.5 million contract extension that binds him to the Crimson Tide through 2033, DeBoer finds himself under an intense microscope. While the administration’s wallet signals total confidence, former NFL MVP Cam Newton remains highly skeptical.

Why Cam Newton Questions Kalen DeBoer’s Fit at Alabama

Speaking candidly on the structural expectations of the powerhouse program on his podcast “4th&1,” Newton offered a blunt assessment of DeBoer’s transition from the Pacific Northwest to the deep South.

“My issue or my take to what Kalen DeBoer is, I think Kalen DeBoer is a great coach,” Newton said. “We’ve seen that when he was at Washington. Mhm. But this is the caveat, Peggy. As Uncle Paulie would say, Paul Finebaum, I don’t think it’s a right fit for him in Alabama.”

“If Kalen DeBoer, him being at one of the most prestigious colleges of this era in Alabama, superseding as the heir apparent to arguably the greatest coach of all time. Not a lot of coaches can come in and give the people what they are expecting. But it’s still going to take, it’s going to take time.”

Newton’s critique isn’t a knock on DeBoer’s resume. Statistically, DeBoer boasts one of the most blistering coaching records in collegiate history.

Across 11 seasons as a head coach, he owns a spectacular 124-20 career record. During his brief two-year stint at Washington, he engineered an explosive 25-3 run, captured a Pac-12 championship, and guided the Huskies straight to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

However, life inside the SEC operates under a fundamentally different set of laws. In Washington, a 10-win season makes you a hero. At Alabama, a two-loss season triggers a systemic panic.

Through his first two seasons at Alabama, DeBoer has posted a 20-8 overall record, securing an 11-4 campaign complete with a CFP berth and a marquee playoff victory at Oklahoma. But in Tuscaloosa, where Saban captured six national titles, a few regular-season stumbles feel like a collapse.

The crux of Newton’s argument centers on the idea of regional grace. Had DeBoer taken his high-flying, offensive blueprint to any other Power Four conference, the fan base would be building him a statue.

“If you take Kalen DeBoer and put him in any other conference outside of the SEC, I think that team and conference will praise him as he should be praised,” Newton said. “ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, any of those teams… going to the College Football Playoffs as an ACC team, that may be cool. That may be acceptable… Now at Alabama, you can’t.”

With a fresh $87.5 million contract securing his financial future, DeBoer isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. He has already proven he can recruit at a high level and win big games, including a thrilling regular-season triumph over Georgia. But as Newton rightly notes, the shadow of Nick Saban leaves zero margin for error.

Currently, PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter gives Alabama a 34.3% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
