Under coordinator Mike Shula, the South Carolina Gamecocks’ offense managed only 225 total yards in today’s game, a season-low performance. After scoring just seven points in a crushing loss to the Oklahoma Sooners, frustrated fans began calling for the offensive coordinator’s job. This latest defeat drops the Gamecocks to 3-4 on the year.
With a brutal schedule featuring games against Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, the team is now in danger of missing a bowl game under head coach Shane Beamer.
Why Are Fans Demanding the Firing of Gamecocks’ Mike Shula?
During the game against Oklahoma, South Carolina’s quarterback, LaNorris Sellers, threw for 124 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts. That touchdown was the team’s only score of the day, a fact not lost on the remaining crowd as “Fire Shula” chants echoed around the stadium.
“Fire Shula!” chants have broken out from the few South Carolina fans that have stuck around.
Not a banner day from the Gamecock OC, but this Oklahoma defense is also nasty.

While the quarterback struggled, Shula’s play-calling has been criticized for shutting down the entire offense. According to PFSN’s CFB offense impact metric, the Gamecocks currently possess just the 61st-best offense in the country. However, some argue that placing all the blame on the offensive coordinator is unfair.
Really tough to pin it all on Shula. They already fired their OL coach, but the Jimmys and Joes are still the same. And this OU DL is among, if not the best in the country.

Hard to call plays when you can’t block the other team. Unfortunately, we know that all too well.

This is the worst offensive line performance by anyone OU’s played.

“This is the worst offensive line performance by anyone OU’s played,” one Oklahoma fan suggested, highlighting a major issue for South Carolina. The team’s offensive line struggles were also evident during last week’s 20-10 loss to LSU. The O-line accounted for five of the team’s 13 penalties in that game. Those issues continued against Oklahoma, as the line gave up six sacks.
Beamer fired offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley earlier in the season, but the problems have persisted. Compounding those issues today was the formidable Oklahoma defensive line, which is considered the best in the nation.
#1 in the country for a reason.
— Wild Card Venables (@jjustasoonerfan) October 18, 2025
“#1 in the country for a reason,” one Sooner fan boasted as their team continues its run for the playoffs. Oklahoma is currently 5-1 on the season and has more than a 20% chance of making the playoffs, according to PFSN’s Playoff Meter.
That’s what this BV defense can do

“That’s what this BV defense can do,” another Sooners fan added.
Meanwhile, the Gamecocks’ season appears all but over. Following today’s loss, their 0.048% chance of making the playoffs has likely dropped to zero. They are also at risk of missing out on a bowl game entirely.
While Beamer isn’t on the hot seat yet, Shula has undoubtedly emerged as a prime target for fan frustration. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier, as the Gamecocks face an even more challenging test against the Alabama Crimson Tide next week.
