College football games are no strangers to celebrity guests, but it is not every day that a comedian on the sidelines becomes part of the broadcast with a story about a bet involving a player’s mom. That is exactly what happened when Theo Von was spotted at Williams-Brice Stadium as Vanderbilt secured a decisive 31-7 victory over South Carolina.
Von, a well-known comedian and podcaster who began his career on MTV’s Road Rules, is famous for his hilarious and quirky quotes. The broadcast team, knowing this, decided an impromptu interview was in order, and the result was pure absurdity.
What Was Theo Von and Diego Pavia’s Bet?
SEC Network sideline reporter Cole Cubelic knew he had gold when he approached Von. He immediately teased the absurdity to the broadcast booth, telling announcers Tom Hart and Jordan Rodgers, “You don’t even want to know what he told me about Diego Pavia’s mom, either.”
This is not exactly a standard sentence heard on most sports broadcasts. To confirm the bizarre story, Cubelic turned back to Von and asked him to clarify what he had just revealed. “If Diego Pavia wins this game, he promised you he would set you up with a date with his Mom?” Von gave a firm nod and a resounding “Yes.” As the booth erupted in laughter, Cubelic simply said, “Okay, there we go.”

As is usually the case with Theo Von, he had more to say on the matter, explaining the reasoning behind the wager. “His Mom is a nurse, and my goal is I would like to marry a nurse one day, so that’s why he was thinking about that.”
As fate would have it, the Pavia-led Commodores went on to win the game handily, which begs the question: Are the stars aligning in Von’s romantic life? It seems not. “I don’t even know if I would do it, I don’t know,” Von admitted. “I like being his friend, I don’t want to end up being his stepdad or something, you know?”. “Yeah, that would be weird, I got it,” Cubelic answered.
And with that, a funny side note to what was a statement win for Vanderbilt has ended. It does not sound like the comedian has any plans to take Pavia up on his offer, but there are two things we know for sure. When Theo Von is on the sidelines of a game, it is always best to go and talk to him, and the 20th-ranked Vanderbilt is for real.
