Arkansas football's coaching search ends with a controversial hire that has Razorback fans questioning the program's direction.

The Arkansas Razorbacks’ prolonged coaching search has finally concluded with Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield reportedly taking the job, but the announcement has been met with widespread fan anger and disappointment across Hog Nation following a turbulent hiring process.

Breaking Ryan Silverfield Hire Announcement

On3’s Brett McMurphy broke the news Sunday that Silverfield is expected to be named Arkansas’ next head coach, ending the Razorbacks’ search to replace Sam Pittman. Pittman was fired after leading Arkansas to a dismal 2-10 season, with the program paying approximately $9.8 million in buyout money.

The 45-year-old Silverfield compiled a 50-24 overall record across six seasons at Memphis, including consecutive 10-win seasons in 2023 and 2024. He guided the Tigers to an 11-2 finish last season, earning Memphis its first AP Poll ranking since 2019 at No. 24.

Despite ranking 10th nationally with a 90.2 offensive impact rating, Arkansas stumbled to a 2-10 record in 2025, highlighting deeper issues Silverfield must address beyond just offensive production.

However, Memphis finished just 8-4 this season after starting 8-1, and Silverfield never won an American Athletic Conference championship during his tenure. He earned $2.25 million in 2025 under his contract with Memphis, significantly less than most SEC head coaches.

The announcement triggered immediate backlash on social media from Arkansas fans who questioned the hire’s credentials. “That’s such a 6-7 hire,” one user said, criticizing the decision to promote a Group of Five coach directly to the SEC.

Others pointed out the embarrassing optics of the situation. “Bad look when memphis fans are rejoicing at this,” one noted, referencing Memphis supporters celebrating Silverfield’s departure online.

The disappointment largely stems from Arkansas’ failed pursuit of USF’s Alex Golesh, who reportedly had a deal in place with the Razorbacks before choosing Auburn instead. “Wtf happened to golesh? they lied to y’all,” one frustrated fan wrote, expressing betrayal over the collapsed agreement.

Additional criticism focused on Arkansas’ lowered standards after an 0-8 SEC season. “2-10 is the standard now in Fayetteville,” one user noted, while another added: “Going 8-4 in the AAC gets you a job in the SEC”.

Arkansas fans have reportedly organized a peaceful protest on campus to voice their displeasure with the hire. The Razorbacks went winless in SEC play under interim coach Bobby Petrino this season, marking only the fourth conference-winless campaign since joining the SEC over three decades ago.

Silverfield now inherits a program searching for stability after its worst season since Chad Morris’s 2019 tenure. The hire represents a significant gamble for Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek, who faces mounting pressure to restore competitiveness in the SEC.
