SEC Under Fire for ‘Deafening Silence’ as Refereeing Error Blamed for Auburn Defeat to Georgia

The SEC is under fire from media pundits and college football fans after no comment on controversial call in the Georgia and Auburn game.

Georgia survived an SEC showdown with Auburn last weekend to improve to 5-1 and move up to #9 in the nation. Auburn put a scare into the Bulldogs with a 10-3 lead at the half, but Georgia stormed back with a 17-0 second-half performance to win 20-10.

A perennial title favorite overwhelming an unranked conference opponent isn’t usually headline material, but the college football world is up in arms over this one.

Questionable Call in Georgia vs. Auburn Game Causes Controversy

Many believe a controversial fumble call in the second quarter fueled Georgia’s comeback. Auburn QB Jackson Arnold dove over the goal line and appeared to give the Tigers team a 16-0 lead. After a review that took several moments, the officiating crew ruled that the play was a fumble, and a 20-0 Georgia run ensued.

The call obviously set the social media world on fire, and the SEC’s lack of explanation has continued to spark controversy.

Aaron Torres Demands an Explanation

Torres took to his show, the ‘Aaron Torres Sports Podcast’, to voice his displeasure. “People will say, the refs didn’t cost Auburn the game,” said Torres. “I’m going to absolutely 100% argue that it did.”

Torres goes on to say that a 17-0 lead for Auburn would’ve ended Georgia’s night, given that they were only able to score 20 points even with the gifted call. Siding with Torres, Tim Brando of FOX Sports took to X to call the SEC’s silence deafening.

It didn’t take long for other college football fans to chime in.

One commenter showed support for Brando and expressed equal frustration with the SEC’s lack of commentary. As for many fans, the lack of accountability has been like pouring salt into a wound.

Many fans’ frustrations were solely about Auburn’s loss. But as one X user pointed out, wins and losses can affect players’ and coaches’ livelihoods, so missed calls like this can have a significant fallout.

While some other fans chimed in, calling the complaints sour grapes from Auburn fans, the fact remains that there is significant controversy around the play. Ultimately, we’ll never know for sure whether Auburn would’ve been able to hold off Georgia, but either way, the play was a turning point in the game.

In the end, the result of Saturday’s game is official, and nothing the SEC officials say now will change that fact. However, in the age of legalized sports gambling and social media, officials and questionable calls have never been more in the crosshairs than they are right now.

Georgia will get back to work this weekend in another marquee SEC match-up against #5 Ole Miss.
