Sawyer Robertson Vows to Help DJ Lagway Transition After ‘Big Name’ Transfer

Sawyer Robertson vows to help DJ Lagway transition to Baylor after the former Florida QB's high-profile transfer to Waco.

The transition of a high-profile athlete often comes with intense scrutiny, and DJ Lagway’s arrival at Baylor is no exception. However, the move is being met with a unique level of veteran support. Sawyer Robertson, the departing Baylor quarterback who is currently preparing for the 2026 NFL Draft, has publicly vowed to help the former Florida five-star recruit navigate his new surroundings in Waco.

Sawyer Robertson Offers DJ Lagway Support After Florida Exit

Robertson, coming off a massive 2025 season where he threw for 3,681 yards and 31 touchdowns, is widely credited with revitalizing the Bears’ offense under Jake Spavital. During Baylor’s Pro Day this week, he spoke candidly about Lagway’s arrival.

Robertson said, “Obviously, he’s (DJ Lagway) a big name and all of that, but he’s an incredible human being. I’m really looking forward to watching him… He seems like he’s doing great and loves it here… I wish him the best of luck. I’ll help him in any way that I can.”

Lagway isn’t just a former top recruit. He is a Baylor legacy whose father, Derek Lagway, played for the program. Robertson understands the specific pressure of playing in Waco, especially after a 5-7 season where the margin for error is razor-thin for head coach Dave Aranda.

While Lagway has the physical tools, he is coming off a sophomore season at Florida where he threw 14 interceptions. Following a reported tense introductory meeting with the new staff, Lagway entered the portal and landed at Baylor. In Waco, he can fit in Spavital’s aggressive spread offense.

However, social media hasn’t been kind after a viral clip from the first day of spring practice showed Lagway struggling with his trademark deep-ball spiral. Despite the early rust, the internal buzz in Waco is that Lagway is finally playing pain-free for the first time in over a year.

Lagway has also been candid about his exit from Florida. In a recent interview from the Allison Indoor Practice Facility, he said that the end of his time in Gainesville was “draining.”

Lagway emphasized that while he “still has love for Gator Nation,” the move to Baylor was about “finding peace” and returning to the roots that made him love football in the first place. But PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter only gives Baylor a 1.6% chance to make the College Football Playoff as of now.
