‘It Hasn’t Worked’ — Roman Harper Sends Brutal Warning to Alabama About Kalen DeBoer

The ghost of Nick Saban continues to loom large over Tuscaloosa. Despite the Kalen DeBoer era’s fair share of excitement, a sobering reality check has arrived from one of the program’s most respected sons, Roman Harper.

Why Roman Harper Is Keeping Alabama Fans Realistic About Kalen DeBoer

Harper appeared in a conversation with the “Alabama Crimson Tide on AL.com” YouTube channel and pulled back the curtain on the internal state of the program, delivering a brutal warning that history is not on the Crimson Tide’s side.

Perhaps the most shocking revelation from Harper is the admission that Alabama’s coaching staff was caught off guard by their own early success.

“Year three should be a year of improvement,” Harper noted. “I talked to a lot of the coaches and staff and people around the team last year, and you know, last year’s success was almost a little bit of a surprise for them. I don’t think they were always thinking that they were ready; they always thought that they were one more year away.”

The core of Harper’s warning, however, isn’t just about roster management. It’s about the historical impossibility of the task at hand. Replacing a GOAT in Nick Saban is a feat that has broken the back of nearly every major sports franchise that has attempted it.

Harper didn’t mince words on this reality: “Anytime you replace a GOAT, it has not worked in any other sport or any other time. It’s a hard job, and Kalen has signed up for that job.”

So, Harper is sounding an alarm for a fanbase that has become accustomed to a standard of perfection. He is reminding the Roll Tide faithful that DeBoer isn’t just coaching against opponents on the field, but he is coaching against the impossible shadow of seven national championship trophies.

Despite the grim historical outlook, Harper did offer a glimmer of hope regarding DeBoer’s leadership during the initial crisis. The transition from Saban to DeBoer was marked by a “big mass of players leaving early,” a chaotic period where the transfer portal threatened to gut the program’s foundation.

“Once he got there, things have calmed down,” Harper observed. “But when he first arrived, it was a big mass… and understandably so.”

In addition, the recent news of DeBoer’s contract extension, a massive $87.5 million deal through 2033, is seen by Harper as a necessary, albeit high-stakes, move to keep the program from sliding into a permanent state of transition. “I’m happy and excited that he signed the extension because, if you like the one you’re with, stay with them. Let’s continue to work at this thing.”

So, Harper’s warning serves as a reminder that it’s not an easy job. For Alabama, the 2026 season isn’t just about making the College Football Playoff.

It’s about defying a historical precedent that says this transition is destined to fail. Currently, they have a 34% chance to make the CFP, per the PFSN CFB Playoff Meter.
