Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein is entering his sixth season with ambitious plans to elevate the Nittany Lions’ offense. The experienced coach has earned recognition across college football for his ability to consistently develop elite linemen.
Trautwein’s track record speaks for itself at Penn State. Since 2020, he has guided seven offensive linemen to the NFL Draft, giving Penn State the second-most drafted linemen nationally while transforming how the team attacks opposing defenses.
Phil Trautwein Explains His Coaching Philosophy and Team Confidence
Trautwein shared his main coaching ideas during a recent interview on the YouTube channel of ‘Locked on Nittany Lions.’ When asked about helping his running backs reach the next level, he outlined his approach for offensive line excellence and dominance.
“Just create lanes, you know, make push, just making sure we dominate the line of scrimmage and we make the opponents play on their side,” Trautwein explained about his methodology.
His approach focuses on controlling the point of attack and forcing defenders to work in uncomfortable positions.
“So, we drive them to make sure that their first contact is, you know, the safety. So, just making sure we give them the opportunity to make that guy miss and not have anybody in the backfield. So, stopping penetration and just doing our job and running off the ball,” he continued about creating clean running lanes.
When asked about having Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton back in the backfield and how that familiarity helps with preparation, Trautwein talked about the confidence it gives his offensive line players.
“So for us as an offensive line, it just gives us that confidence to know that we don’t have to be perfect and they’ll help us. But, you know, our goal is to be perfect,” he said about working with experienced players.
Penn State’s Historic 2024 Season Sets Foundation for 2025
Penn State concluded the 2024 season with an exceptional 13-3 overall record and reached the College Football Playoff semifinals for the first time in program history. The Nittany Lions finished as the No. 6 seed and made their deepest playoff run since the format was established.
The team posted an impressive 8-1 conference record in Big Ten play and reached the Big Ten Championship Game. Penn State ranked 8th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 16.5 points per game while showing strong offensive balance throughout the season.
