Immanuel Iheanacho is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing recruiting stories of the 2026 cycle.
He has been making headlines recently following his visit to Oregon. But it seems like James Franklin may be ready to flip the script.
While Oregon has long been viewed as the frontrunner for the 5-star lineman, Penn State has executed a genius pitch that’s turning heads.
Penn State’s Bold Recruiting Move Could Shock Oregon in Immanuel Iheanacho Race
Franklin is playing chess, not checkers. And it is all around Iheanacho, the No. 1 interior offensive lineman and No. 8 overall player in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is scheduled to visit Oregon this weekend, and most reports suggest the Ducks still hold the edge in landing his commitment.
But many forget that Iheanacho has already made an official visit to Penn State’s Happy Valley. The Baltimore native has been heavily recruited by top programs like Oregon, LSU, and Auburn. Still, Penn State is quietly leaning into one powerful advantage: location. Analysts believe this proximity could make a huge difference.
“They told me that I don’t have to fly seven hours away to Oregon to do what I want to do, but I can do it all at Penn State where my parents can see each game,” Iheanacho told ON3. “They really showed me their plan for me, how I can play early there and all of that was big for me.”
This “proximity” pitch is central to Franklin’s recruiting strategy. And it’s paying off. According to 247Sports, this was Iheanacho’s fourth visit to Penn State, showing serious interest despite Oregon leading in On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Recently, Penn State insider Zach Seyko explained why this recruitment means more to the Nittany Lions than it does to Oregon. He said, “That’s precisely why I say this is a more important recruitment for Penn State than it is for Oregon. Penn State’s not in the middle of a battle right now for four or five or who knows even more five stars in this cycle.”
Seyko added, “It’s also a chance to return the favor to Oregon because they’ve won a couple mutual recruiting battles here and there… Brandon Finney is kind of the most notable one recently… Oregon in theory is 2 and 0 against Penn State in recruiting here and 1 and 0 on the football field.”
The insider also emphasized the long-standing relationship between Penn State and Iheanacho, saying, “Penn State has been recruiting Iheanacho for the longest time… probably almost either the longest standing relationship, if not one of them, among all the college football programs that have been recruiting Iheanacho from the start. So that’s where Penn State wins.”
The Ducks have already lost Jackson Cantwell to Miami and Kodi Greene to Washington, making Iheanacho a must-land for Dan Lanning’s staff. While Oregon still holds the edge, the Nittany Lions have momentum.

Iheanacho is expected to announce his commitment on Aug. 5. With Penn State’s 2026 class currently ranked No. 7 nationally, landing him could elevate the Nittany Lions into elite territory.
It remains to be seen if Franklin’s proximity pitch proves decisive, but it is clear that Penn State is now directly challenging Oregon.
