‘Peak Florida Man’ — CFB World Reacts As Jon Sumrall Announces ‘Crazy’ Plan on Missing Bowl Game

Florida coach Jon Sumrall has been one of the most vocal coaches in college football about the outsized expectations for the Gators next season. Sumrall is seeking to turn around a Gators team that has floundered in the last few years and has fallen behind the elite programs in college football, finishing with a woeful 4-8 record last year.

College Football Fans React to Jon Sumrall’s Intense Gators Expectations

In Monday’s segment of the “Action Sports Jax” podcast, Sumrall addressed the huge expectations for the Gators during his first year in charge and the question of bowl eligibility as a bare minimum.

“I’ve got expectations to win every game we play,” Sumrall said. “I’m not comfortable with anybody going, ‘Hey, how many games are you comfortable winning this year?’ If anybody tells me bowl eligible, we’d better be, or I’ll be at the top of the stadium getting ready to do something stupid.

“To me, you have to have urgency every day. As soon as you put a ceiling or a cap on what you can do and start to think with limits in mind, you’re automatically handicapping yourself. For me, our expectations are for our guys to expect to win every freaking time that we take the field.”

Under former coach Billy Napier, the Gators fell from grace and missed out on bowl eligibility twice, including last year when he was fired midway through the season. In addition, Florida had a woeful 12-16 SEC and 22-23 overall record, including a 5-17 record against ranked opponents in three and a half seasons in charge.

College football fans on X had mixed reactions to Sumrall’s intense message about the bowl eligibility expectations for his team next season.

The College Football Zone account was not sure whether the former Tulane coach’s passion was a good or a bad thing for the Gators.

“Jon Sumrall is insane. Curious if it’s the good insane or the bad insane. He will be fun to watch at Florida regardless,” the tweet read.

Meanwhile, the SEC Unfiltered account on X threw a lighthearted jab at the Gators coach: “Jon Sumrall is peak ‘Florida Man’ crazy,” the tweet stated.

On the other hand, Opinionated Media founder Cam Thierry was hyped by the coach’s comments.

“I like Sumrall lmao,” Thierry tweeted.

In four seasons as head coach of the Troy Trojans and the Tulane Green Wave, Sumrall managed an impressive 43-12 record and established himself as one of the most coveted coaches in the country. Last season was his best yet, clinching a shocking College Football Playoff berth with the Green Wave.

Despite the optimism around the Gators after Sumrall’s appointment, PFSN’s College Football Playoff Meter predicts that the SEC powerhouse will win 5.46 games next season, just short of bowl eligibility.
