Oklahoma general manager Jim Nagy has experienced the electric atmosphere at AT&T Stadium as a former front-office official with the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, and Washington Redskins.
It is not surprising that the Sooners’ GM expressed his excitement to Oklahoma fans living in Dallas or nearby upon learning that their 2027 game against SMU will be held at the iconic home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jim Nagy Reacts to Oklahoma vs SMU Clash at AT&T Stadium
Nagy responded to a social media post by the Sooners football team announcing the location of the September 11, 2027, clash against the SMU Mustangs. He expressed excitement for the Sooner faithful living in and around the Dallas metroplex.
The Oklahoma GM would like to see more fans cheering for the team in the stadium.
“50k more seats for our DFW Sooners!!!” Nagy wrote.
Oklahoma fans are expected to mark the date and set aside a significant amount to attend the game at AT&T Stadium. The stadium may also open its standing-room areas to increase fan capacity to 100,000, as the Sooners’ faithful are willing to pay to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event at the iconic stadium.
SMU usually plays its home games at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Still, the Mustangs recognize the impact of their scheduled games against two SEC teams (the other on September 1, 2029, against LSU) on spectators, since SEC-affiliated teams have large followings and are likely to fill the arena and cheer for their teams.
The Mustangs previously played at the Cowboys’ other home, Texas Stadium, beginning in 1972, and held all home games there from 1979 to 1986. During that span, they recorded four 10-win seasons and posted winning records in seven of eight years.
In a statement, SMU Athletics Director Damon Evans said that playing Oklahoma and LSU at AT&T Stadium “evokes our historic presence on the national stage, including the Pony Express era.”
He added that it also helps the school generate more revenue, promote the program’s brand visibility, and engage with alumni partners who support the vision of Mustang Partners and the team’s continued growth in the ACC.

For his part, SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee emphasized the importance of continuing to play in stadiums that allow football fans across the Metroplex to support the Mustangs. He said they intend to promote other national brands in iconic venues on national television.
“Our players aspire to play in the NFL, and the opportunity to compete in the Cowboys’ premier stadium gives them a chance to experience that environment and showcase their talent on a big stage,” he said.
The Mustangs and the Sooners have met eight times since 1925, with the Sooners (ranked 60th on PFSN’s CFB OFFi) leading the all-time series 6-1-1.
Oklahoma won its last meeting in Norman, 28-11, in 2023, while SMU’s only win came in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl, edging Oklahoma, 28-27.
