Will Weather Delay Notre Dame vs. USC?

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported on X that Notre Dame announced kickoff against USC will proceed on schedule despite weather concerns in the area, with warmups set to begin soon.

“Notre Dame announces kickoff against USC will be on schedule, despite the weather in the area. Warmups to begin soon,” Rittenberg wrote on X.

Notre Dame canceled its Victory Walk and temporarily held fans from entering the stands while issuing shelter-in-place advisories due to lightning detected near Notre Dame Stadium ahead of the 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

On-site reports indicated rolling safety messages and phased re-entry to the stands as operations monitor conditions under standard NCAA lightning protocols.

The protocols require suspending outdoor activity for at least 30 minutes after the last lightning strike within a defined detection radius, typically 6–8 miles for college venues. Each additional strike inside that range resets the 30-minute clock, meaning delays can extend if storms linger or intensify near the stadium.

Game management will clear teams to proceed with warmups and kickoff if 30 consecutive minutes pass without lightning inside the defined range. The No. 13 Irish host No. 20 USC in a rivalry game carrying major College Football Playoff implications for both programs.

Notre Dame’s offense is ranked 16th in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, with an 85.7 score and a B grade, while USC’s is ranked 1st, with a 94.7 score and an A grade.

PFSN’s Playoff Meter projects 8.2 wins for Notre Dame with a 14.04% playoff chance and 8.38 wins for USC with a 22.12% playoff chance.

What Other College Football Games Were Delayed by the Weather?

No. 3 Indiana defeated Michigan State 38-13 after a halftime lightning delay in Bloomington forced fans to shelter before play could resume. The stoppage interrupted a Big Ten matchup with the Hoosiers already holding a commanding lead over the Spartans.

TCU defeated Baylor 42-36 in Fort Worth after multiple fourth-quarter lightning delays at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The game was stopped with TCU leading 35-21 and 13:46 remaining, forcing both teams to the locker rooms while officials monitored conditions in the area.

No. 4 Texas A&M vs. Arkansas in Fayetteville had its kickoff pushed back two hours to 4:30 p.m. CT because of severe weather and lightning in the area. The SEC matchup finally got underway after storm cells moved through Northwest Arkansas, with the Aggies leading 21-13 at halftime.

Saturday’s disruptions highlight how unpredictable October weather can affect college football schedules. Lightning safety takes priority across all levels of the sport. Multiple high-profile games faced extended interruptions as storms rolled through their regions.
