The 2025 season was a trial by fire for Nico Iamaleava. After a high-profile transfer from Tennessee, he arrived at UCLA to find a program in total flux. The Bruins’ disastrous 3-9 campaign saw head coach DeShaun Foster fired after an 0-3 start.
However, things are finally turning around for Iamaleava this offseason. By deciding to return for 2026 rather than testing the NFL Draft or the portal again, he provides the Bruins with rare continuity at the most important position.
Bob Chesney Hails Nico Iamaleava as UCLA’s Poised Leader Amid Massive Roster Overhaul
Newly appointed head coach Bob Chesney recently appeared on “ESPN LA” and discussed his quarterback. After arriving from James Madison, Chesney pointed out that he found Iamaleava “in the middle of the pack, in the middle of the lines.” But Iamaleava quickly understood the situation and was back at the front of the line.
Chesney said, “Watching him (Nico Iamaleava) control this team and watching him keep them after practice to have words for them, positive or negative, whatever needs to be done. He’s certainly accepting that leadership role. He understands that it’s never a one-man show.”

Despite playing under duress, being sacked 27 times, and navigating a locker room on the brink of collapse, Iamaleava remained the team’s heartbeat. He accounted for 1,928 passing yards and 505 rushing yards, famously rallying the team to a historic 42-37 upset over No. 7 Penn State.
Chesney continued, “I think last year, there was a lot of duress he was under. There were a lot of things he had to deal with. I thought he kept his poise as best he could. He didn’t do a lot of complaining and tried to find ways to keep competing. I think he’s been nothing short of magnificent up to this point in time.”
Chesney’s arrival has completely reset expectations in Westwood. The internal expectation is no longer just survival in the Big Ten. With a massive haul of 41 transfers, including James Madison stars like Wayne Knight and Sahir West, Chesney is building a roster designed to compete for a bowl game and stabilize the program’s foundation.

But the question remains: how quickly can Iamaleava build chemistry with new deep threats like Landon Ellis and Semaj Morgan? Regardless of the learning curve, Iamaleava remains the ultimate fix for UCLA.
Iamaleava’s ability to extend plays with his legs and his newfound poise under pressure will be the engine of Chesney’s offense. This development could boost UCLA’s current 0.6% chances to make the playoffs, according to PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter.
