When LSU decided to part ways with head coach Brian Kelly, the Tigers’ job immediately became one of the most sought-after positions in college football.
While rumors have placed several candidates for the opening in Baton Rouge, one LSU insider believes longtime Alabama head coach and college football legend Nick Saban may at least be listening to an offer, as he is currently the betting favorite to become the program’s next head coach.
LSU Insider Believes Nick Saban Is Considering Tigers’ Job
The LSU opening is one of the most intriguing jobs in college football. The program is a true blue-blood and offers NIL resources and recruiting pipelines that any coach would dream of.
Kelly did well on the recruiting trail but struggled to deliver on-field results with the Tigers. 2025 was his worst season yet, as LSU lost three games before his firing and now has a 0% chance to make the College Football Playoff, according to PFSN’s CFB Playoff meter.
Several sources have connected Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin, and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady to the role following Kelly’s departure. However, according to Louisiana Sports Net, Saban, who won a national title with the Tigers in 2003, is currently the betting favorite to become LSU’s next head coach.
LSU insider Matt Mascona explained that while Saban may have the best odds of becoming the Tigers’ next coach, everything he’s heard suggests otherwise. Still, the odds indicate the betting market might know something the public doesn’t.
“The coach with the best odds to be the next LSU head football coach is Nick Saban,” Mascona said. “Not just on the list, at the top of the list. I get it. Ms. Terry doesn’t want him to coach anymore. Nick wants to stay retired. I get it.”
He later added, “What do they know? Everyone I talk to says, ‘Nick ain’t coming.’ Ok. I believe you. I still don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Mascona makes a strong point. No reliable college football journalist with credible sources has reported that Saban, who appears to be happily enjoying his retirement and his new gig on “College GameDay,” is interested in taking the LSU job.
Still, Mascona believes that with the odds suggesting Saban has a strong chance of becoming the Tigers’ next head coach, it likely means he’s at least considering an offer from LSU and possibly thinking about coming out of retirement.
“You could show me two-to-one odds, Nick Saban to be LSU’s next coach, you have my attention,” Mascona said. “Because what that tells me is there’s at least enough interest to be listening, and you might be able to find a guy who will make an impulsive decision and jump back in at some point.”
While Mascona’s curiosity about the betting odds makes sense, they probably don’t mean much. If Saban were honestly eyeing the role, some college insider would’ve caught wind of it by now. With no reports suggesting any interest, it’s safe to assume Saban’s staying retired. This leaves the Tigers to search elsewhere for Kelly’s replacement.
