Texas A&M coach Mike Elko has led the No. 3 Aggies to a flawless season so far, accounting for their lofty spot in the latest College Football Playoff ranking. The Aggies have a 9-0 record so far this season, with a chance to reach the SEC championship game.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, every game has become pivotal for the Aggies. Elko’s team faces a tricky game against the underperforming but potent South Carolina Gamecocks, led by talented quarterback LaNorris Sellers, in College Station.

Elko Warned His Team Against Collapse
Last year, after an early-season loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Texas A&M went on a seven-game winning run to put itself in a prime position to reach the SEC championship game and clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff. Then they lost to the Gamecocks in Columbia in November, before losing to the Auburn Tigers on the road and the Texas Longhorns in College Station, ending their bid for SEC dominance and a playoff spot.
During his weekly news conference before the game against South Carolina, Elko warned his team against slacking off, as they did last year.
“From a CEO perspective, obviously, I believe this is what this program is capable of,” Elko said. “That’s why we’re here. We believe the ceiling of this program is really high. For nine games, we’ve lived up to it. Now, we’ve got to finish. Is this our last question from last year?
“I don’t know about the past. I know we’re 4–0 this year on the road, and we’ve only got one left. The culture of this group is really strong. The work they’ve put in, the way they believe in each other, it’s showing up every week. We’re not finished yet, but we’re getting there.”
The Aggies were seeking to go 10-0 for the first time in program history, but by halftime of the game against the Gamecocks, Texas A&M fans were getting flashbacks of last year’s collapse.
