South Carolina Faces LaNorris Sellers Transfer Portal Warning as Potential Destination Reported

College football insider Todd McShay hinted at South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers joining the Miami Hurricanes instead of declaring for the draft.

After narrowly missing the College Football Playoff in 2024, the South Carolina Gamecocks have stumbled to a disappointing 3-6 record in 2025. At the center of the team’s downturn is quarterback LaNorris Sellers, whose once-promising future in Columbia is now shadowed by uncertainty.

Following a stellar freshman year, Sellers’ performance has dipped, raising questions about whether his time with the program could be nearing an unexpected end.

Why Are Transfer Rumors Swirling Around LaNorris Sellers?

The team’s offensive struggles have been a major storyline this season. In nine games, Sellers has tallied 1,536 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions, while adding 158 yards and three scores on the ground. The issues on offense led to the firing of coordinator Mike Shula last week, with Mike Furrey taking over play-calling duties for the remainder of the season. This coaching turmoil has only fueled national speculation about Sellers’ future.

During a segment on Thursday’s “McShay Show,” analyst Todd McShay suggested that Sellers is a prime candidate to enter the transfer portal. He warned the Gamecocks that other programs are ready to pursue their talented quarterback, identifying the Miami Hurricanes as a team to watch once the polarizing Carson Beck departs.

“Sellers needs to return and there’s a feeling he could return,” McShay said. “But might not be at Columbia, South Carolina. I couldn’t have more respect for that operation (Gamecocks) and the people running it. If anything, let’s call this a public service announcement. ‘Hey, there are some sharks in the water and they’re coming after your boy…And not become the next Miami QB that comes out of somewhere else and has a great year and becomes a high draft pick.”

McShay’s warning about Miami is rooted in recent history. Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal has a track record of developing transfer quarterbacks, having molded Cam Ward from Washington State into the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Following that success, Cristobal acquired Beck from the Georgia Bulldogs, reinforcing his reputation for maximizing transfer talent.

When asked about the rumors, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer kept the focus on the immediate future. During his weekly news conference before the Gamecocks’ Week 12 game against the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies, he deferred any long-term discussion about his quarterback.

“There’s a time and place to discuss his decisions beyond 2025,” Beamer said. “Right now, it’s helping him and the rest of our team be the best version of themselves these next three weeks. We still haven’t played our best football, and we’re still chasing that.”

The concern over a potential departure is significant because of what Sellers has already accomplished. Under Beamer’s guidance in 2024, Sellers was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and earned Third-Team All-SEC honors. He began the 2025 season with the fifth-best preseason odds to win the Heisman Trophy before slipping out of contention, a stark reminder of the high expectations he once carried.
