Matt Rhule Credits Anthony Colandrea’s Spark for Nebraska Shift After Dylan Raiola Exit

Matt Rhule praised transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea for his confidence, revealing he has "lit up" the Nebraska team.

Nebraska may have found its next spark, and it’s arriving with confidence, composure, and a growing buzz inside the program.

Following the departure of former starting quarterback Dylan Raiola to Oregon, the Cornhuskers entered the offseason with uncertainty at the most important position on the field. But that uncertainty is quickly turning into optimism, thanks to incoming transfer Anthony Colandrea, who is already making a strong impression on head coach Matt Rhule and the rest of the team.

Why Transfer QB Anthony Colandrea Could Be the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ Saving Grace

Appearing on the Big Ten Network, Rhule was gushing about his new quarterback and Colandrea’s early impact. “He’s unbelievably confident, yet he’s not arrogant. He’s a guy people want to play for…he’s really lit up our team.”

That type of presence is exactly what Nebraska needs after such an interesting 2025 season. While last season showed progress, it ultimately fell short of the expectations surrounding Rhule’s rebuilding effort. The Cornhuskers hovered in that frustrating middle ground of being competitive but not quite ready to take the leap into true Big Ten contention.

Colandrea might be the missing piece they’ve needed all along.

After an underrated 2025 campaign at UNLV, Colandrea quietly emerged as one of the most effective quarterbacks in the country. He posted a PFSN CFB QB Impact score of 86.7, ranking 14th nationally, an indicator of both efficiency and overall influence on winning. Despite flying under the national radar, his production and playmaking ability stood out to those paying close attention.

What makes Colandrea particularly intriguing for Nebraska is his dual-threat versatility. He’s capable of stretching defenses vertically with his arm while also being able to pick up chunk yards on the ground with his legs. That balance adds a new dimension to the Cornhuskers’ offense, one that could unlock more explosive plays and sustain drives, something they struggled to do consistently last season.

Just as importantly, his leadership style appears to be resonating. Rhule’s comments highlight not just talent; intangibles are just as important for the QB position, and that could elevate the entire locker room. Confidence without arrogance and energy without chaos are qualities that often separate good quarterbacks from great program-changers.

Of course, Colandrea’s emergence alone won’t determine Nebraska’s ceiling in 2026. The defense, which allowed 24.6 points per game last season according to the PFSN CFB Defense Impact metrics (67th nationally), will need to tighten up if the team hopes to compete with the best of the Big Ten.

Cleaner execution on that side of the ball, paired with a more dynamic offense, could be the formula Nebraska has been searching for.

There’s still a quarterback competition to play out, but early signs point to Colandrea as the frontrunner, and potentially a better schematic fit for what Rhule wants to build.

If his early momentum carries into the season, Nebraska could find itself not just improved but dangerous. In a conference loaded with heavyweights at the top, like Ohio State and Michigan, the Cornhuskers may be positioning themselves as a legitimate sleeper.

And if that happens, it might all trace back to a confident new quarterback who, in Rhule’s words, has already “lit up” the team.
